Troubleshooting
Problem
Unable to add disk to VIOS rootvg to remirror the volume group after VIOS upgrade.
Symptom
Scenario: I'm trying to add hdisk0 back to VIOS rootvg to remirror after upgrading VIOS to version 4.1.1.10, but extendvg command fails:
$ lspv
NAME PVID VG STATUS
hdisk0 00fb8076xxxxx5fa old_rootvg
hdisk1 00fb8076xxxxx98d rootvg active
hdisk0 00fb8076xxxxx5fa old_rootvg
hdisk1 00fb8076xxxxx98d rootvg active
extendvg -f rootvg hdisk0
0516-029 extendvg: The Physical Volume is a member of a currently
varied on Volume Group and this cannot be overidden.
0516-1397 extendvg: The physical volume hdisk0, will not be added to
the volume group.
0516-792 extendvg: Unable to extend volume group.
0516-029 extendvg: The Physical Volume is a member of a currently

Cause
In this scenario, the error is valid because lspv shows hdisk0 is still the alternate disk copy, used by "old_rootvg".
Environment
PowerVM VIOS 4.1
Diagnosing The Problem
Run lspv command to verify the hdisk specified with extendvg command is a member of the alternate rootvg.
Resolving The Problem
1. Run alt_root_vg command with -remove option to remove old_rootvg definition from the ODM.
$ alt_root_vg -remove old_rootvg
Example
$ alt_root_vg -remove old_rootvg
Volume group has been successfully deleted.
Volume group has been successfully deleted.
$ lspv
NAME PVID VG STATUS
hdisk0 00fb8076xxxxx5fa None
hdisk1 00fb8076xxxxx98d rootvg active
hdisk0 00fb8076xxxxx5fa None
hdisk1 00fb8076xxxxx98d rootvg active
2. Then, add the disk back to rootvg using extendvg command with -f (force) flag:
$ extendvg -f rootvg hdiskN
Example
$ extendvg -f rootvg hdisk0
hdisk0 changed
hdisk0 changed
$ lspv
NAME PVID VG STATUS
hdisk0 00fb8076xxxxx5fa None
hdisk1 00fb8076xxxxx98d rootvg active
