Update(s) for HMC V11R1M1110

How To

Summary

This document covers the methods that can be used to apply software maintenance service packs and fixes to HMC V11R1. The document will be updated during the release to detail the latest available service pack and ifix. There are multiple ways to update the HMC and the most common are detailed in the various sections below. Once you cover the prerequisite steps you can skip to the section that details the update method you intend to use.

Objective

Update the HMC to the current service level.

Environment

7063-CR2, vHMC x86, vHMC Power

Steps

Prerequisites
Before updating, review the following:

The HMC can no longer be updated directly from public.dhe.ibm.com. HMC network update is supported from Fix Central using SFTP option or by staging the updates on a local server.  HMC V11  supports updates using the IBM website repository.

1. Verify the HMC is at V11R1M1110
If the HMC is not at V11R1M1110, you must first upgrade to V11R1M1110. To upgrade the HMC to V11R1M1110, refer to document -

Model 7063-CR2 and vHMC for PowerVM: Upgrading the HMC from Version V10R2M1030 to V11R1M1110
vHMC on x86: Upgrading the HMC from Version V10R2M1030 to V11R1M1110
2. Determine the type of HMC (x86 versus ppc)
Determine which PTF download is needed based on the HMC model or vHMC component.

x86 This term is used to reference HMCs running on vHMC hosted by x86, Intel, AMD hardware and hypervisors (KVM, VMWare, Xen).

ppc Term is used to reference HMCs running on 7063 type or vHMC hosted by Power servers.
 3. Review the readme files:

Service Pack M1111.0

PTF MF71744 HMC V11 R1 M1111.0 - for vHMC for x86_64 hypervisors (5765-HMU)

PTF MF71745 HMC V11 R1 M1111.0 - for 7063-CR2 Hardware or vHMC for PowerVM (5765-HMD)

iFix for M1111.0

PTF MF71748 HMC V11 R1 M1111.2 - for vHMC for x86_64 hypervisors (5765-HMU)

PTF MF71749 HMC V11 R1 M1111.2 - for 7063-CR2 Hardware or vHMC for PowerVM (5765-HMD)

**These fixes cannot be ordered on media.
4. Note: HMC V11R1 release for x86 is not supported on bare metal (7042 hardware appliances).
5. Reboot the HMC (only if you did not restore a backup on this release.)
If the HMC has not been restarted recently, restart before you begin the updates. To check the last reboot use the command who -b. To restart the HMC, click HMC Management > HMC Actions (drop down arrow) > Shut Down or restart > restart HMC then click OK

GUI Update options

Service Packs and iFixes

1. Start within the HMC Management task area and using the HMC Actions button at time right then choose the "Update HMC" task from the drop down menu.

b. The easiest option when using the GUI Update HMC task is to use the task to obtain the update package from IBM. You can obtain the update package from IBM by using either the "IBM web site" or "SFTP" options.  By selecting IBM web site from the update image location section you will avoid having to determine additional information needed to use the SFTP option.  Your HMC would need to be able to access the Internet for either option to work.

(1) If you use the "IBM web site" option for the update image location your screen task would look similar to the following.

Update HMC

(2) Select the service pack listed and then click on Update HMC to continue.  A successful update should show a screen similar to following.

Update HMC Successful

(3) Click on Restart HMC to continue.
NOTE: if you had checked the "Restart the HMC if required" box in initial screen then the restart will happen automatically.

(4) When the HMC completes all updates and restarts you just need to repeat the same process in steps 1.a - 1.b shown above and select the iFix.

  (a) If updating an x86 vHMC you will want to select PTF MF71748

  (b) If updating 7063 appliance or PowerVM vHMC you will want to select PTF MF71749

  (c) After installation of the iFix is completed restart the HMC

(5) Information on how to verify the package was installed is listed in later part of this document.

c.  If you decide to use the GUI to select SFTP option then you will need to get additional information such as the update package name, the server name and the user ID and password.  This can be accomplished using the IBM Fix Central site as described below.

(1)  Go to Fix Central 7063 ppc or Fix Central vHMC x86 set the download option to Download using bulk FTPS/SFTP. Then find the release level that shows service pack: HMC V11R1M1111 -> MF71745.  Click Continue, and sign on with IBMid. This will give you the Server name, user and password that will need to be used in the following screens.  The package filename can be found in the readme text for the fix.  The names are listed below as well.

HMC_Update_V11R1M1111_ppc.iso (for 7063-CR2 or vHMC on PowerVM) or

HMC_Update_V11R1M1111_x86.iso (for vHMC x86)

(2) On the GUI, select HMC Management, then click the HMC Actions drop down arrow to select Update HMC-
image-20250820170751-6

(3) In the next screen, Check the box for Restart the HMC if required, make sure the Image location is set to SFTP server. Enter the Server name, User ID and Password that you got from Fix Central, along with the file name f. Then click Update HMC button.

image-20250820171050-7

(4) If successful, you should get a screen like this, where you would need to click the Restart HMC button.

(5) When the HMC completes all updates and restarts you just need to repeat the same process in steps 1.c as shown above and use the iFix package instead of the service pack info.

  (a) If updating an x86 vHMC you will want to select PTF MF71748 (the package name will be MF71748_x86.iso)

  (b) If updating 7063 appliance or PowerVM vHMC you will want to select PTF MF71749 (the package name will be MF71749_ppc.iso

  (c) You will still need to use IBM Fix Central to setup the SFTP download so you get the server address, user ID and password like was done for the service pack,

  (d) After installation of the iFix is completed restart the HMC

(6) Information on how to verify the package was installed is listed in later part of this document.

SSH Command line update options for Service Packs and ifixes

1. The updhmc command is used for either service pack and ifix updates.  As with the GUI the user can pull down the images from IBM directly using type option ibmwebsite or sftp.

2.  Using IBM Web Site type option - If HMC can connect to internet the easiest fix location to use is ibmwebsite and the command syntax is as follows.

a. Update to SP 1111 using following syntax

vHMC on x86:  updhmc -t ibmwebsite --ptf vMF71744 -r

7063 on ppc:  updhmc -t ibmwebsite --ptf MF71745 -r

vHMC on   ppc:  updhmc -t ibmwebsite --ptf vMF71745 -r

b. Update to latest iFix using following syntax

vHMC on x86:  updhmc -t ibmwebsite --ptf vMF71748 -r

7063 on ppc:  updhmc -t ibmwebsite --ptf MF71749 -r

vHMC on  ppc:  updhmc -t ibmwebsite --ptf vMF71749 -r

3. Using SFTP to pull down the images will require you additional information regarding the server address, user name and password as well as the package filename. Go to Fix Central 7063 or Fix Central vHMC x86, select the fix you want, then continue. Use the Download files using bulk FTPS/SFTP option. Agree to the terms, and you will get the

a. Fix package location.

delivery04.dhe.ibm.com along with a User and Password. The user given and password given are good for 24hrs.

b. Syntax using updhmc for installing the fix

(1) vHMC on x86 command syntax.

updhmc -t sftp -h delivery04.dhe.ibm.com -u {User given} -p {Password given} -r -f HMC_Update_V11R1M1111_x86.iso

(2) 7063 or vHMC on ppc command syntax

updhmc -t sftp -h delivery04.dhe.ibm.com -u {User given} -p {Password given} -r -f HMC_Update_V11R1M1111_ppc.iso

*Make sure to reboot after the fix is installed. command is - hmcshutdown -t now -r

4. Once the service pack is installed and HMC rebooted you then repeat the process for the iFix.

b. If updating 7063 appliance or PowerVM vHMC you will want to select PTF MF71749 (the package name will be MF71749_ppc.iso

updhmc -t sftp -h delivery04.dhe.ibm.com -u {User given} -p {Password given} -r -f MF71749_ppc.iso

c. You will still need to use IBM Fix Central to setup the SFTP download so you get the server address, user ID and password like was done for the service pack,

d. After installation of the iFix is completed restart the HMC

e. Information on how to verify the package was installed is listed in later part of this document.

Alternative: Stage the updates on a local server
If the HMC does not have direct access to the IBM website, the files can be downloaded and placed on a local server. The HMC supports installing fixes over the network by using ftp,  sftp, and nfs protocols. To update from a local server instead of direct from the IBM website, do the following:
1. Use Fix Central to download the fix to your PC, then FTP to your local server
*PTFs for a Service Pack will be under "+ Show patched by"
2. For this option, you would need to go to Fix Central, select the Service Pack or iFix, and set the download option to HTTPS.
3. Once the file or files are downloaded to your PC, then move to your local server using ftp or sftp.
4. You can either use the GUI option shown above, or SSH command line. Be sure to use the credentials for that remote server.

USB Update
(This only works if you have a Linux box) - reason, Windows does not write to EXT4 USB, which is needed for this update.
Instructions for downloading the fixes and installing them from USB media using a Linux box (7063 ppc only)
1. Format the USB on a HMC(HMC used must be at V10R3M1050 (minimum) which will now format EXT4, which is needed for the fixes)
(USB 8GB or larger)
2. Download the Corrective Fixes (see above)
Go to Fix Central and download the fix to your PC, (download option should be HTTPS) then Move the file to a Linux box.
(Windows does not write to EXT4 USB)

Download the fix-

Fix Central : 7063 or vHMC on ppc  - MF71745 (File: HMC_Update_V11R1M1111_ppc.iso)

3. Copy the fixes to USB media.

a. Use the formatted USB and insert into your Linux box

b. Copy one or more iso files to media.
The fixes are copied to media as data.

4. Install the fixes by using the following installation instructions. (Service Pack goes on first)

5. Insert the USB into the HMC that has the copied Fix on it.
6. From the GUI screen, select HMC Management>HMC Actions>Update HMC. (Screen shot is shown above.) Select USB in the Image location drop down.
Check the box for Restart the HMC if required.
