IBM Support

Unable to Start Cognos Analytics due to 'NodeJS Services port range' error

Troubleshooting

Problem

Starting IBM Cognos Analytics fails with the error message:

"IBM Cognos Analytics fails to start, displaying the following error message:
[ ERROR ] The port range '9303-9323' in parameter 'NodeJS Services port range' located in 'Environment' is invalid. Please choose a port range that includes at least '10' available ports."

Cause

There are still orphaned node.exe processes from the last time the service was stopped, which have occupied the specified port range for Node.js. This port range is defined in IBM Cognos Configuration > Environment.

This can happen if the IBM Cognos service is not started or stopped using IBM Cognos Configuration, but instead through Microsoft Windows Services.

Diagnosing The Problem

Open Task Manager and check for any active node.exe processes. End these processes to ensure a clean startup of Cognos Analytics.

It's also a good practice to check for any other lingering processes before attempting to start the service again.

Resolving The Problem

  • Close IBM Cognos Configuration if it is currently open.

  • Terminate any orphaned processes (e.g., node.exe ) that are running in the background. Use Task Manager (Windows) or equivalent system monitoring tools to identify and terminate any such processes.

  • Relaunch IBM Cognos Configuration and start the IBM Cognos service.
