Summary

The IBM Rack-Mounted Flat-Panel Console Kit with Keyboard (ETF6) is a feature of the 7063-CR2 Hardware Management Console.
This article describes the steps to configure the display settings on the HMC for the optimal resolution and aspect ratio of the console kit.

Objective

The default display mode on the HMC does not result in an optimal resolution mode for the ETF6 console kit.
This document outlines the steps to modify the display configuration to select the optimal resolution for the console kit (ETF6).

Environment

7063-CR2 Hardware Management Console using the IBM Rack-Mounted Flat-Panel Console Kit with Keyboard (ETF6).

Steps

These steps are to be performed while interacting locally with the console kit (ETF6).
How to access the Display configuration selection?
When the HMC is started, a Display configuration selection menu is shown for 30 seconds.

If the user does not interact with this screen, the HMC moves on to the next step, and eventually reaches either the license acceptance screen (if yet to be accepted), or the login screen.
NOTE: If the Display configuration selection menu does not show because the option "Exit and do not run this program again." was previously selected, it can be re-enabled by running the following command, and then rebooting the HMC:
chhmc -c dispcfg -s enable

If the HMC is powered on, and has gone past the Display configuration selection menu, the following keystroke sequence can be pressed to reload the X server and trigger the menu to show, Alt-Ctrl-Backspace.
If the HMC is powered off, then power it on and wait for the Display configuration selection menu to be shown.
Changing the display configuration:
  1. When the Display configuration selection menu is shown, it is required to move the cursor until it is visible within the boundaries of the menu. Keystrokes will not register if the cursor is not within the menu box (cursor focus).
    NOTE: The cursor will not be visible while it is outside the menu. It may be necessary to move the cursor towards the top left on the track pad, until it becomes visible as it enters the menu window. Once it becomes visible within the menu window, maintain the cursor inside it.
  2. Using the arrow keys, move the selection to the Change to a new display configuration option

  3. Use the Tab key to highlight the Next button, and press Enter
  4. At the Display mode selection screen, use the arrow keys to select the 4th option, 1920x1080 1680x1050 1280x1024

  5. Use the Tab key to highlight the Apply button, and press Enter
  6. At the Display configuration reset selection screen, use the arrow keys to select Restart the console now to allow changes to take effect

  7. Use the Tab key to highlight the Next button, and press Enter
  8. At the Display configuration selection screen, use the arrow keys to select either Run this program again on the next console startup or Do not run this program again

  9. Use the Tab key to highlight the Next button, and press Enter
