Abstract

After upgrading to IBM Engineering Requirements Management (ERM) 7.1 SR1, Customers who enable the new cross-server link constraint functionality may encounter issues when attempting to create links between a V7.1 SR1 server and servers running pre-V7.1 SR1 releases. Specifically, link creation between V7.1 SR1 and earlier versions fails when advanced property "Enable cross-server link constraints" is set to true.

Root Cause
This issue arises due to a design limitation introduced in V7.1 SR1:
  • Starting with V7.1 SR1, RM servers use the /checklinkconstraints service to validate cross-server link creation.
  • Pre-V7.1 SR1 servers do not implement this service, and therefore cannot respond to validation requests.
  • When the V7.1 SR1 server attempts to validate a link with a pre-V7.1 SR1 server, it receives a 404 Not Found error.
  • As per the current design, if no valid response is received from the remote server, the link creation is denied. The following error message is displayed.
    • UI error message
      • The server does not permit the attempted operation.
        ID CRRRW7558E  The following message might indicate why the server does not permit the operation. To troubleshoot this issue, ask the server administrator to check the server configuration. For more information about the cause of the error, check the message details. Also, ensure that the current user has permissions to perform this action and that sufficient required licenses are installed and activated on the server and have not expired. To check your licenses, from the Jazz Team Server administration pages, click Server > License Key Management. If you have sufficient, correct, and up-to-date licenses and are an administrator, check the teamserver.properties file in the /server/conf/rm directory to ensure that the file contains the correct server name and port number. If you are not an administrator, ask a server administrator to check the teamserver.properties file.

  • Furthermore, the following error message is recorded in the rm.log.
    • ERROR aints.internal.CrossServerLinkConstraintsValidator - Remote Server https://remote.ibm.com:9443/rm does not support the checklinkconstraints Service
Recommended Solution
To ensure seamless cross-server linking and avoid link creation failures:
  • Upgrade all RM servers in your environment to at least version V7.1 SR1 if any server has already been upgraded to V7.1 SR1.
  • If you do not intend to use the cross-server constraints feature, keep the "Enable cross-server link constraints" advanced property value set to false.
This ensures compatibility across servers and enables successful validation of cross-server link constraints.
