Abstract

Runtime latency is observed when TLS connections are closed which can cause impact and unexpected behavior on DataPower.

IBM DataPower has identified an unexpected problem with early releases of the 10.6.0.x fixpacks when using TLS that can trigger system instability:
  • This includes any usage of TLS, but is primarily observed with using HTTPS in the product.
  • While previous issues may not have been encountered or observed, this issue can arise unexpectedly as it relates to network factors which create an unpredictable scenario.
DataPower 10.6.0.2, 10.6.0.3, 10.6.0.4 fixpacks introduced a change in how TLS connections are closed which cause runtime latency. This regression might not impact all customers, but when seen it could cause high latency, connection timeouts, and spike in CPU usage. This issue could potentially lead to an outage in some environments.
Solution: We highly recommend upgrading to fixpack 10.6.0.5 or higher to include fix DT436845.
Recommended Actions if on 10.6.0.2, 10.6.0.3, 10.6.0.4 fixpacks:
  1. Assure systems are setup properly for Failure Notification Status to capture unexpected reload/reboot events
  2. Schedule a maintenance window for your upgrades in non production/production.
  3. Assure you have a secure-backup on the current fixpack level or perform your existing backup process
  4. Test the upgrade in a staging, non-production environment (Consider performing Step 6 to track uptime)
  5. If no issues, perform production upgrade to 10.6.0.5 or later fixpack level.
  6. Verify stability past upgrade:
    1. Review 'show time' or Date Time Status in the WebUI for uptime values.
    2. Review Failure Notification Status for any unexpected reason codes such as "watchdog", "crash", "low memory".
    3. Any challenges please create a case or use the existing case to provide error reports from the impacted
