Summary

The DSET tool, captures and stores logs and information about the hardware of Dell PowerEdge Servers and Blades (HW info, BIOS version, RAID configuration, System Event Log etc) in a zip file.

Objective

The goal of this topic is show how to capture the DSET log from within the OS.

Steps

1. Capturing the DSET in Windows
 
  •  Note the Dell DSET Tool for Windows is not available any more at Dell Support website. Copy DSET installer (Dell_DSET_version.msi) and save it to your desktop.
 
  • Double-click the icon to start the DSET application.
 
 
 
  • Click next on the first screen you see.
 
 
 
  • Accept the Software License Agreement and click “next”.
 
 
 
  • Click “Next” on the Readme Information.
 
 
 
  • Select “Create DSET Report only” and click “Next”.
 
 
 
  • Optionally you can fill out the requested information and click “Next”.
 
 
 
  • On the next screen, select “Gather Advanced Configuration Information”, add a meaningful report name (eg servername + report date) and click “Next”.
 
 
  • On the following screen make sure all skip options are deselected and click “Next”.
 
 
 
  • Click “Finish” on the following screen and the DSET collection will start.
 
 
 
  • A command line screen will popup and the DSET progress will be documented in it. After a couple of minutes it will display the DSET has completed successfully. Press any key to close the command line screen.
 
 
 
  • The DSET zip file will be saved to the desktop.

2. Capturing the DSET in Linux
 
  • Note the Dell DSET Tool for Linux is not available any more at Dell Support website. Copy DSET installer (delldset_version_x64_A01.bin) and save it to tmp folder.
 
 
 
  • First you’ll have the make the bin file executable. Therefore you need root privileges.
  • Open the console and make sure to switch to a privileged user like root and browse to the tmp folder with command cd /tmp. Next make the bin file executable with the following command:

        chmod 700 delldset_version_x64_A01.bin
 
  
 
 
  • Next, execute the DSET with the following command:

        ./delldset_v2.2.125_x64_A01.bin
 

 
 
  • The Software License Agreement will appear. Type in q to proceed.
 
 
 
  • On the next screen, choose option 2 “Create DSET Report only”

 
 
  • Next you’ll have to choose the report options. Set the options as indicated in the screenshot below:
