Resolving 403 Forbidden Errors in Developer Portal: Misconfigured Load Balancer/Reverse Proxy

Troubleshooting

Problem

Users may encounter 403 forbidden errors when using a Load Balancer or Reverse Proxy in front of the Developer Portal due to excessive requests from the load balancer/reverse proxy to the Portal site.

Symptom

In the Portal-www admin container logs you might see a message like the following:
[ nginx stdout] 1961 fe500f:96eded:bf0d08 2025-05-06 10:57:37: "10.1.2.3, 10.179.28.215" portal.ibmlab.test "GET /lab/intranet/ HTTP/1.1" 403 41 1219 453 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/120.0.0.0 Safari/537.36" 0.032 "-"
Here, 10.1.2.3 represents the IP address of the Gateway/Load balancer and 10.179.28.215 is the internal ip of the pod
