How to Install / Remove a System Board
Steps
Servicing the System Board
Safety Precautions:
- Always ensure that you are authorized to perform the repairs as per your product documentation or as directed by Dell's service and support team. Unauthorized servicing may void your warranty.
- If your system incorporates a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) with an encryption program, remember to provide the recovery key for your data before you can access the encrypted information on your hard drives.
- Post system board replacement, it's mandatory to update the Unified Server Configurator repository to the latest software version to ensure full functionality.
Procedure for System Board Removal:
- Power off the system and all connected peripherals, and disconnect the system from the electrical outlet.
- Follow the instructions to open the system.
- Remove the power supply(ies) as per the provided guidelines.
- Remove the cooling shroud.
- Take out all expansion cards and the integrated storage controller card.
- If present, remove the NIC hardware key from the system board and then remove the two riser boards.
- Remove the fan bracket.
- For systems with 3.5-inch hard-drive chassis, remove the SAS backplane. Remember to take out the hard drives first, label them for correct reinstallation, and disconnect all cables from the backplane before removal.
- Disconnect all cables from the system board.
- Remove the system board assembly by pulling up the blue retention pin and sliding the assembly out. Ensure not to lift the board by its memory modules latches, processor heatsink, or any other components.

Procedure for Installing the New System Board:
- Unpack the new system board and remove the label placard from the memory module socket.
- Attach the labels from the placard to the information tag on the front of the system.
- Transfer the processors and heat sinks to the new system board.
- Install the memory modules in the same locations on the new board.
- Install the new system board by angling it into the chassis, ensuring all retention hooks are inserted into the slots, and pushing the board until the blue retention pin locks into place.
- If applicable, transfer the NIC hardware key.
- Replace the riser boards.
- Reinstall the integrated storage controller card.
- If applicable, reconnect the RAID battery cable to the storage controller card.
- Reconnect all power and interface cables.
- If removed, reinstall the SAS backplane and all hard drives.
- Install all expansion cards.
- If applicable, transfer the iDRAC6 Enterprise card to the new system board.
- Replace the fan bracket.
- Replace the cooling shroud.
- Close the system.
- Reconnect the system to its electrical outlet and power on, including any attached peripherals.
