Removing a Processor

To remove a processor, follow these steps:

  1. Update the system BIOS to the latest version from the official support website before upgrading.
  2. Power down the system and disconnect it from the electrical outlet.
  3. Access the system's interior. Refer to the relevant section for instructions.
  4. Remove the cooling shroud. Consult the guide on removing the cooling shroud.
  5. Allow the heat sink and processor to cool before handling them.
  6. Release the heat-sink levers one at a time, waiting 30 seconds between releases.
  7. Gently lift the heat sink off the processor and set it aside.
  8. Release the processor socket-release lever, rotating it 90 degrees upward.
  9. Rotate the processor shield upward and out of the way
  10. Lift the processor out of the socket, taking care not to bend any pins on the ZIF socket.
  11. Leave the release lever up to prepare the socket for the new processor.

Installing a Processor

To install a processor:

  1. Remove any blanks from the vacant processor socket if adding a second processor.
  2. Unpack the new processor.
  3. Align the processor with the socket keys on the ZIF socket.
  4. Install the processor in the socket, ensuring correct positioning to avoid damage. a. Align the processor with the socket keys and set it lightly in the socket. b. Close the processor shield. c. Rotate the socket release lever down until it snaps into place.
  5. Install the heat sink. a. Clean the heat sink of any thermal grease. b. Apply a spot of thermal grease to the top center of the new processor. c. Place the heat sink on the processor. d. Close the heat-sink release levers.
  6. Replace the cooling shroud. Follow the instructions for reinstalling the cooling shroud.
  7. Close the system. Refer to the section on closing the system.
  8. Restore power to the system and peripherals.
  9. Enter the System Setup program (by pressing ) and verify the processor information matches the new configuration.
  10. Run the system diagnostics to ensure the new processor operates correctly.

  • Always handle components with care to avoid damage and maintain warranty coverage.
  • Ensure the system BIOS is updated before installing a new processor.
  • Properly align and install the processor to avoid permanent damage to the system board or processor.
