Error description

  • An IDCAMS ALTER of a user catalog increased the size of the
catalog VVR. The VVR did not fit anymore into the same CI in the

VVDS and had to be moved. In the particular case it was an ALTER

with LOG(NONE) which added an RLS cell to the VVR.

When a VVCN exists in the VVDS, there are different situations
where the RBAs for the catalog in either the VVCR or VVCN are
not updated. These RBAs are needed to open the catalog.

As a result, another ALTER for the same catalog failed to locate

the catalog VVR for the data component and the catalog became
    inaccessible.

    The following messages were seen:

    IEC251I 205(050,007,IGG0CLHV)-132 (RC50 RSN7)
    IEC331I 004-31 (RC4 RSN31)
    IEC161I 004-080 (RC4 RSN80)

    ANALYSIS:
Looks like when a VVR is moved, the RBA values are not
immediately updated in a normal case but the next OPEN should
    update them.

    1) When it is moved to a different place before the VVCN and the

catalog name is in the VVCR, the next open will update the RBAs
in the VVCR and the open proceeds.

    2) When it is moved to a different place before the VVCN and the

catalog name is in the VVCN, the next open fails.

    3) When it is moved to a different place after the VVCN and the
catalog name is in the VVCR, the next open fails.

    4) When it is moved to a different place after the VVCN and the
catalog name is in the VVCN, the next open fails.

    KNOWN IMPACT:
    Catalog becomes inaccessible

Local fix

  • BYPASS/CIRCUMVENTION:
Before the ALTER take a DSS PRINT of the VVDS of the catalog
volume and ensure that the CI which contains the Catalog VVR
does not contain any other data.

    RECOVERY ACTION:
IBM support may provide a zap to correct the RBA values.
If the zap does not work, restore the catalog from a backup.
