Security Bulletin: A Netty vulnerability affects Rational Test Workbench / DevOps Test Workbench ( CVE-2024-47535 )

Security Bulletin

Summary

Rational Test Workbench / Devops Test Workbench are vulnerable to a denial of service due to a vulnerability in Netty ( CVE-2024-47535 )

Vulnerability Details

CVEID:   CVE-2024-47535
DESCRIPTION:   Netty is an asynchronous event-driven network application framework for rapid development of maintainable high performance protocol servers & clients. An unsafe reading of environment file could potentially cause a denial of service in Netty. When loaded on an Windows application, Netty attempts to load a file that does not exist. If an attacker creates such a large file, the Netty application crashes. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.1.115.

IBM strongly recommends addressing the vulnerability now.

Product(s)VersionRemediation/Fix
Rational Test Workbench10.2.3Download interim fix
Rational Test Workbench10.5.4Download interim fix
DevOps Test Workbench11.0.4Download interim fix

Please update to the latest maintenance version for your product's release stream as shown above.

Instructions:

  1. Download the interim fix for your product and version.
  2. Unzip the zip file into a temporary directory.
  3. Follow the instructions below for each component:

Rational Integration Tester (RIT) / DevOps Test Integrations and APIs (DTIA)

  1. Close RIT/DTIA if it is running.
  2. In the temporary directory where you extracted the interim fix, you will find a component-specific zip file:
    • For RIT: rit-<product-version>-CVE-2024-47535.zip (e.g., rit-10.5.4-CVE-2024-47535.zip)
    • For DTIA: dtia-11.0.4-CVE-2024-47535.zip
  3. Copy this component-specific zip file into the product installation directory. By default this is:
    • For RIT: C:\Program Files\ibm\RationalIntegrationTester
    • For DTIA: C:\Program Files\ibm\DevOpsTestAPI
  4. Unzip the file contents into this directory.
  5. Launch RIT/DTIA from the command line with the -clean option, e.g., IntegrationTester -clean.

Rational Integration Tester Agent (RITA) / DevOps Test Integrations and APIs Agent (DTIA-A)

  1. Close RITA/DTIA-A if it is running.
  2. In the temporary directory where you extracted the interim fix, you will find a component-specific zip file:
    • For RITA: rita-<product-version>-CVE-2024-47535.zip (e.g., rita-10.5.4-CVE-2024-47535.zip)
    • For DTIA-A: dtia-a-11.0.4-CVE-2024-47535.zip
  3. Copy this component-specific zip file into the product installation directory. By default this is
    • For RITA: C:\Program Files\ibm\RIT-Agent
    • For DTIA: C:\Program Files\ibm\DevOpsTestAPIAgent
  4. Unzip the file contents into this directory.
  5. Launch RITA/DTIA-A from the command line with the -clean option, e.g., Agent -clean.

Rational Test Control Panel (RTCP) / DevOps Test Virtualization Control Panel (DTVCP)

  1. Stop RTCP/DTVCP if it is running.
  2. Find the installation directory. By default this is
    • For RTCP: C:\Program Files\ibm\RationalTestControlPanel
    • For DTIA: C:\Program Files\ibm\DevOpsTestControlPanel
  3. Open the directory <installation directory>\usr\servers\defaultServer\apps\kairosdb.war\WEB-INF\kairosdb.
  4. Copy the lib directory to a temporary location as a backup.
  5. Open the lib directory.
  6. Delete all JAR files that begin with "netty" (such as netty-all-4.1.108.Final.jar, netty-buffer-4.1.108.Final.jar, etc.). If using command prompt, this can be done with del netty*.jar .
  7. In the temporary directory where you extracted the interim fix, you will find a component-specific zip file:
    • For RTCP: rtcp-<product-version>-CVE-2024-47535.zip (e.g., rtcp-10.5.4-CVE-2024-47535.zip)
    • For DTVCP: dtvcp-11.0.4-CVE-2024-47535.zip
  8. Extract the contents of the component-specific zip file into the lib directory.
  9. Start RTCP/DTVCP.

Disclaimer

According to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an "industry open standard designed to convey vulnerability severity and help to determine urgency and priority of response." IBM PROVIDES THE CVSS SCORES ""AS IS"" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ANY ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL SECURITY VULNERABILITY. In addition to other efforts to address potential vulnerabilities, IBM periodically updates the record of components contained in our product offerings. As part of that effort, if IBM identifies previously unidentified packages in a product/service inventory, we address relevant vulnerabilities regardless of CVE date. Inclusion of an older CVEID does not demonstrate that the referenced product has been used by IBM since that date, nor that IBM was aware of a vulnerability as of that date. We are making clients aware of relevant vulnerabilities as we become aware of them. "Affected Products and Versions" referenced in IBM Security Bulletins are intended to be only products and versions that are supported by IBM and have not passed their end-of-support or warranty date. Thus, failure to reference unsupported or extended-support products and versions in this Security Bulletin does not constitute a determination by IBM that they are unaffected by the vulnerability. Reference to one or more unsupported versions in this Security Bulletin shall not create an obligation for IBM to provide fixes for any unsupported or extended-support products or versions.
