Security Bulletin
Summary
Vulnerabilities in glibc affect Cloud Pak System.
Vulnerability Details
CVEID: CVE-2024-33600
DESCRIPTION: nscd: Null pointer crashes after notfound response
If the Name Service Cache Daemon's (nscd) cache fails to add a not-found
netgroup response to the cache, the client request can result in a null
pointer dereference. This flaw was introduced in glibc 2.15 when the
cache was added to nscd.
This vulnerability is only present in the nscd binary.
CWE: CWE-476: NULL Pointer Dereference
CVSS Source: IBM X-Force
CVSS Base score: 5.3

CVEID: CVE-2024-33601
DESCRIPTION: nscd: netgroup cache may terminate daemon on memory allocation failure
The Name Service Cache Daemon's (nscd) netgroup cache uses xmalloc or
xrealloc and these functions may terminate the process due to a memory
allocation failure resulting in a denial of service to the clients. The
flaw was introduced in glibc 2.15 when the cache was added to nscd.
This vulnerability is only present in the nscd binary.
CWE: CWE-617: Reachable Assertion
CVSS Source: CISA ADP
CVSS Base score: 7.3

Remediation/Fixes
IBM strongly recommends addressing the vulnerability now by applying the fix reported below.
IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.4.1 provide IBM OS Image for Red Hat Enterprise Linux System v4.0.4.0 based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux v8.10 and IBM OS Image for Red Hat Enterprise Linux System v5.0 based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4.
For Intel, upgrade to minimum Fix Pack required IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.4.0, and apply IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.4.1 at IBM Fix Central
information on upgrading here http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=ibm10887959
IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.5.0 provides OS Image for Red Hat Enterprise AIX v.3.1.3.0 based on AIX 7.2 TL5 SP8.
For Power, apply IBM Cloud Pak System v2.3.5.0 at IBM Fix Central.

Disclaimer
According to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an "industry open standard designed to convey vulnerability severity and help to determine urgency and priority of response." IBM PROVIDES THE CVSS SCORES ""AS IS"" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ANY ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL SECURITY VULNERABILITY. In addition to other efforts to address potential vulnerabilities, IBM periodically updates the record of components contained in our product offerings. As part of that effort, if IBM identifies previously unidentified packages in a product/service inventory, we address relevant vulnerabilities regardless of CVE date. Inclusion of an older CVEID does not demonstrate that the referenced product has been used by IBM since that date, nor that IBM was aware of a vulnerability as of that date. We are making clients aware of relevant vulnerabilities as we become aware of them. "Affected Products and Versions" referenced in IBM Security Bulletins are intended to be only products and versions that are supported by IBM and have not passed their end-of-support or warranty date. Thus, failure to reference unsupported or extended-support products and versions in this Security Bulletin does not constitute a determination by IBM that they are unaffected by the vulnerability. Reference to one or more unsupported versions in this Security Bulletin shall not create an obligation for IBM to provide fixes for any unsupported or extended-support products or versions.
