Troubleshooting
Problem
Error HSCL3647 occurs when attempting to remove virtual switches in a PowerVM environment. The error indicates that the virtual switches are still in use by virtual Ethernet adapters that are dependent on inactive partitions or profiles.
Symptom
When trying to remove virtual switches in the HMC, the following error message is displayed:
HSCL3647 One or more inactive partitions or profiles have virtual Ethernet adapters that are configured to use virtual switch vswitch01
Cause
The virtual Ethernet adapters in inactive partitions or profiles still have dependencies on the virtual switches. The virtual switches cannot be removed until these dependencies are cleared.
Environment
IBM PowerVM/VIOS environment managed by HMC
Diagnosing The Problem
- Log into the HMC command line interface using any "superadmin" user credentials.
- Run the below command to display the profiles and show any active dependencies between virtual Ethernet adapters and the virtual switches.
Use the following command to list the profiles and their dependencies on all the virtual switches:
lssyscfg -r prof -m (managed system name )
or
Use the following command to list the profiles and their dependencies on specified virtual switches:
lssyscfg -r prof -m (managed system name) -F "lpar_name,name,virtual_eth_adapters" | grep -E "(Virtual switch name)" -
Review the output to identify which profiles still have virtual Ethernet adapters linked to the virtual switches.
Resolving The Problem
- For each LPAR profile that has virtual Ethernet adapters dependent on the virtual switches, clear these dependencies in the GUI as noted from the lssyscfg output.
This involves a two step approach, that is to remove the virtual switch configuration from the Lpar profile and later on clearing the Virtual switch from the managed system (Frame).
Step 1:
To remove the virtual switch configuration from the Lpar profile.
A. Login to the HMC GUI using any "superadmin" user credentials.
B. Expand "System resources" > click on the Partitions.
C. Search for the desired partition where you want to remove the virtual switch mappings > Click on the partition.
D. Click on the "Partition profiles" > Select the desired profile > Virtual networks .
E. Select the adapter to be removed from the profile and Delete.
Step 2 :
To remove the virtual switch from the Managed system.
After clearing the dependencies from the profiles, proceed to remove the virtual switches from the managed system (Frame).
For additional instructions on removing virtual switches, refer to the official IBM documentation: Removing a virtual switch - Finally, ensure that the virtual switches have been successfully removed and that no further errors such as HSCL3647 occur during the process.
