Error description

  • After upgrading the IBM Storage Protect Plus (SPP) server to
version 10.1.16.3, the CPU utilization ratio rises to more than
100% for the 'mongod' service. The high consumption of the CPU
is causing slow response when accessing the SPP graphical
interface and can affect the communication to the VADP proxy.
On vSphere graphical view at the 'Performance Overview' page
high peaks on the CPU consumption can be seen for the SPP host.

When you run the 'top' command on the command line interface of
the SPP server, you may see the following eg:
    <timestamp> INFO .. Expiring retention snapshot <SnapshotName>
PID   USER PR  VIRT    RES  S  %CPU  %MEM TIME+  COMMAND
    123 mongod 20 21.6g  20.3g  S 291.2  15.2  347:46 /usr/bin/
     mongod --quiet -f /etc/mongod2.conf --wiredTigerCacheSizeGB
     =22.57 run

Problem conclusion

  • IBM Storage Protect Plus was exhibiting the CPU spike issue
because of multiple "Association_PathToId" calls as seen
reported by the MongoDB instance when the user is logged-in
    using non-admin LDAP user.
In IBM Storage Protect Plus 10.1.16.4 and later, this issue is
fixed by providing all the non-admin users privilege to 'Read'
the VMware resources for Backup and Restore workflows, without
    actually compromising the 'Write' privilege.
This limitation is now documented in the Product limitation
    document.
