IHS startup can hang or be extremely slow with lib_security on AMD EPYC processors systems: initializeSecurity: setting GSK iocallback

Troubleshooting

Problem

Starting an IBM HTTP Server may hang or be extremely slow at start-up when configured with SSL transports, when running on AMD EPYC processors systems.  When the SSL transports are removed the IBM HTTP Server starts with no problem.   Similarly configured systems running AMD EPYC processors may or may not see this behaviour.

Symptom

The main symptoms include:
  • The IBM HTTP Server parent process, whose process ID is reflected in the PidFile (logs/httpd.pid), starts and continues running  - but not any child processes
  • The IBM HTTP Server error_log even with higher level logging (DEBUG or TRACE) does not show any obvious errors
  • With debug logging configured in plugin-cfg.xml, the last entries in  http_plugin.log are:

[06/Nov/2024:13:11:18.59407] 0027c7a9 8d432f00 - DEBUG: lib_security: initializeSecurity: Setting FIPS environment over SSL transports
[06/Nov/2024:13:11:18.59408] 0027c7a9 8d432f00 - DEBUG: libSecurity: FIPS support for SSL is disabled
    [06/Nov/2024:13:11:18.59409] 0027c7a9 8d432f00 - DEBUG: lib_security: initializeSecurity: setting GSK iocallback
