CatalogSource not available or timeout errors when running the upgradeOperator command to upgrade to Cloud Pak for Business Automation v24.0.0

Troubleshooting

Problem

Running the cp4a-deployment.sh -m upgradeOperator to upgrade Cloud Pak for Business Automation v24.0.0.x can fail with certain timing issues that could impact Ifix upgrades or upgrading from prior product versions. This issue generally occurs when the cluster has the ibm-operator-catalog installed.
Note: This catalog is not used by Cloud Pak for Business Automation but might be used by other IBM software.

Symptom

The script can fail in two different points with these error in the command line output:
  • # Validate CatalogSource for operator ibm-cert-manager-operator in ibm-cert-manager namespace

[✘] Error in /home/cert-kubernetes/scripts/cpfs/installer_scripts/cp3pt0-deployment/common/utils.sh at line 649 in function validate_operator_catalogsource: The expected CatalogSource ibm-cert-manager-catalog from ibm-cert-manager CatalogSourceNamespace is not available for ibm-cert-manager-operator in ibm-cert-manager namespace. Also there are multiple CatalogSources for ibm-cert-manager-operator available in the cluster, please create the expected CatalogSource, or specify the correct CatalogSource name and namespace and re-run the script again.

  • [INFO] Checking for IBM Cloud Pak foundational operator pod initialization
