Security Bulletin: Multiple vulnerabilities in IBM SDK for Node.js affect IBM Business Automation Workflow

Security Bulletin

Summary

IBM Business Automation Workflow Configuration Editor is packaging a vulnerable version of the Node.js runtime and vulnerable library versions.

Vulnerability Details

CVEID:   CVE-2024-43796
DESCRIPTION:   expressjs express is vulnerable to cross-site scripting, caused by improper validation of user-supplied input. A remote attacker could exploit this vulnerability using a specially crafted URL to execute script in a victim's Web browser within the security context of the hosting Web site, once the URL is clicked. An attacker could use this vulnerability to steal the victim's cookie-based authentication credentials.
CVSS Base score: 5
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/359421 for the current score.
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:L)

CVEID:   CVE-2024-37372
DESCRIPTION:   Node.js could allow a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions, caused by the improper processing of UNC paths by the Permission Model. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to lead to vulnerable edge cases.
CVSS Base score: 3.7
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/297436 for the current score.
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N)

CVEID:   CVE-2024-22020
DESCRIPTION:   Node.js could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system. By embedding non-network imports in data URLs, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to bypass network import restrictions and execute arbitrary code on the system.
CVSS Base score: 6.5
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/297433 for the current score.
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:H/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:H)

CVEID:   CVE-2024-22018
DESCRIPTION:   Node.js could allow a remote attacker to obtain sensitive information, caused by an inadequate permission model that fails to restrict file stats through the fs.lstat API. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to retrieve stats from files that they do not have explicit read access to.
CVSS Base score: 3.7
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/297435 for the current score.
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:N)

CVEID:   CVE-2024-36137
DESCRIPTION:   Node.js could allow a remote attacker to bypass security restrictions, caused by an error when the --allow-fs-write flag is used. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability using a "read-only" file descriptor to change the owner and permissions of a file.
CVSS Base score: 3.3
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/297434 for the current score.
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N)

CVEID:   CVE-2024-36138
DESCRIPTION:   Node.js could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the system, caused by the incomplete fix of CVE-2024-27980 which was the improper handling of batch files in child_process.spawn / child_process.spawnSync. By sending a specially crafted command line argument, an attacker could exploit this vulnerability to inject and execute arbitrary commands on the system.
CVSS Base score: 8.1
CVSS Temporal Score: See: https://exchange.xforce.ibmcloud.com/vulnerabilities/297432 for the current score.
CVSS Vector: (CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H)

Disclaimer

According to the Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), the Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) is an "industry open standard designed to convey vulnerability severity and help to determine urgency and priority of response." IBM PROVIDES THE CVSS SCORES ""AS IS"" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING THE IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. CUSTOMERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ASSESSING THE IMPACT OF ANY ACTUAL OR POTENTIAL SECURITY VULNERABILITY. In addition to other efforts to address potential vulnerabilities, IBM periodically updates the record of components contained in our product offerings. As part of that effort, if IBM identifies previously unidentified packages in a product/service inventory, we address relevant vulnerabilities regardless of CVE date. Inclusion of an older CVEID does not demonstrate that the referenced product has been used by IBM since that date, nor that IBM was aware of a vulnerability as of that date. We are making clients aware of relevant vulnerabilities as we become aware of them. "Affected Products and Versions" referenced in IBM Security Bulletins are intended to be only products and versions that are supported by IBM and have not passed their end-of-support or warranty date. Thus, failure to reference unsupported or extended-support products and versions in this Security Bulletin does not constitute a determination by IBM that they are unaffected by the vulnerability. Reference to one or more unsupported versions in this Security Bulletin shall not create an obligation for IBM to provide fixes for any unsupported or extended-support products or versions.
