IBM Support

PureApplication Base images are supported for the lifecycle of the underlying OS

Detailed System Requirements

Abstract

This document describes the underlying OS associated with each OS base image. The products that are identified for this support are:
- PureApplication System
- PureApplication Software
- PureApplication Service

Content

It is recommended that you use the supported IBM OS Image versions corresponding to the IBM PureApplication release for your workload deployments. To find out what the latest IBM OS images are for your IBM PureApplication, refer to this document: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg27039159 and select the applicable version link under the “System maintenance and pre-entitled components” column.

If your IBM OS Image is at a level where the operating system is out of date, we recommend that you upgrade your IBM PureApplication version and re-deploy to the latest IBM OS Image versions in order to receive continued support.

For more information about the OS lifecycles, refer to these documents:

RHEL: https://access.redhat.com/support/policy/updates/errata

AIX: https://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=isg3T1012517

Security patches update:

IBM PureApplication provides security patches or vulnerability fixes for those IBM OS images that are in service. The interim fixes are tested on base OS images before uploading them on IBM Fix Central.

Security patches that are required for the OS images can be found at: https://www.ibm.com/support/fixcentral/
Note: Redeploy the patterns by selecting the recent base OS image if it is out of service.

Known Limitations:

If you decide to update your deployed VM’s operating system beyond the level that is supported for your PureApplication release, be aware, this is an unsupported option with limitations and is not recommended:

  • Updating the OS on the VM will not update the IBM OS Image version. If the IBM OS Image version is out of service, then eFixes cannot be applied even though the OS has been updated and is still in service.

  •  Updating VMs created from patterns using the base scaling policy, will not update the topology.json.  The topology.json file will continue to have a reference to the older IBM OS Image. When scaling out, newly created VMs will be at the OS level of the older IBM OS Image.

  • Middleware may not work on migrated IBM OS Images. Considerations need to be made to ensure that middleware are compatible with updated OS versions.

  • Your updated VM might not work as expected.
