IMPORTANT UPDATE FOR ANY SETSCDS COMMAND:
DUE TO A SOFTWARE RESTRICTION THESE MESSAGES WILL APPEAR FOR ANY

CDS THAT IS SMS MANAGED AND DEFINED WITH A DVC GREATER THAN THE
VOLCOUNT. THE ONLY CIRCUMVENTION IS TO REDEFINE THE CDS SO THAT

THE VOLCOUNT IS EQUAL TO THE DVC, OR REMOVE THE DVC, OR MAKE IT
NON SMS MANAGED (NO STORAGE CLASS).

    the CDS resides.
    .
If an ACDS and SCDS are created with a data class
DYNAMIC VOLUME COUNT value greater than the number
of available volumes in the storage group, an IEF244I

This can also occur for SETSMS SAVESCDS

                           SETSMS SAVEACDS commands.
The System Administration Manual chp 2, topic:
Selecting Volumes for Control Data Sets, reads:
    .
SMS control data sets can be either SMS-managed or
non-SMS-managed. Initially you should ensure that
your control data sets have a volume count of one.
The volume count can be either explicitly specified,
implied by the number of volume serials provided, or
derived from the data class assigned to the data set.
If you give an SMS control data set a volume count that
is greater than the number of volumes on which it
actually resides you might receive messages
IEF244I and IEF489I when you attempt to activate it.
    ..
Message IEF489I has been replaced by IEF877E.
    ..
The manual does not address the scenario
when the data class has a dynamic volume count specified.
Customer had a volume count of 1 but DVC=59.
Customer was not able to activate the configuration
until he defined a new set of ACDS and SCDS with
a dynamic volume count value with less volumes
than the total numbers of volumes available
    in the storage group.

    msgIGD058I rc12 rsn6066, msgIGD040D
    .
NOTE: For a Non-SMS Managed control data set, During
an activation the Dynamic Volume Count or the Volume Count must
be less than or equal to the number of volumes mounted STORAGE.

Local fix

  • Circumvention is use a data class with a dynamic
volume count less than the total number of enabled
volumes in the storage group and in the system.
    .
NOTE: For a Non-SMS Managed control data set, During
an activation the Dynamic Volume Count or the Volume Count must
be less than or equal to the number of volumes mounted STORAGE.

Problem summary

  • ****************************************************************
    * USERS AFFECTED: Users at DFSMSdfp 1G0 and higher releases. *
    ****************************************************************
    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: MSG IEF244I and IEF489I received when *
    * volume count or dynamic volume count is *
    * greater then the available units. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
When the volume count or the dynamic volume count is greateer
then the units available for allocation of an SMS-MANAGED SMS
control data set, MSG IEF244I may be issued.

Problem conclusion

  • The SMS Adminstration Reference manuel will be updated to
indicate that volume count from the Data class can be the value
specified for the Dynamic volume count if it is greater then the
value specified for the Volume count attribute.

z/OS DFSMSdfp Storage Administration Reference (SC26-7402-01),
Chapter 2 : Selecting volumes for Control Data Sets:

Revise the second sentence in the first paragraph as follows:

"The volume count can be either explicitly specified, implied
the number of volume serials provided, or derived from the
data class assigned to the data set (the greater value of
volume count or dynamic volume count)."
