Abstract
This document details an updated example z/OS Workload Manager (WLM) policy developed by the Washington Systems Center (WSC).
Content
This updated starter policy includes classification examples for new workloads running on IBM Z and examples of new features made available in z/OS Workload Manager in recent years.
The policy was also updated to follow current best practice recommendations from the WSC as of 2024. This includes recommendations related to I/O Priority Management, Service Definition Coefficients, new work classification, a capping service class, CICS management, CPU Critical, service class goals, and other classification guidelines.
A guidance and general recommendations document is also provided to assist in using the starter policy and updating your own WLM policies.
The following three documents can be downloaded from https://github.com/IBM/IBM-Z-zOS/tree/main/zOS-WLM/Samples.
- V2024 WSC WLM Starter Policy: Excel based service definition to view the starter policy.
- V2024 WSC WLM Starter Policy Guidance: PDF with guidance and recommendations for using z/OS WLM.
- WLMPOL.WSCDEF.XML: XML version of the starter policy.
This service definition is for sample purposes only. It is intended to provide examples of how to specify WLM constructs. Installations are expected to change the service definition for their specific situation as appropriate before activating any policy. We have documented some items we expect customers to change and those things we recommend they do.
