Abstract:
HIPER MCL’s have been released in Driver 51 Bundle S31b to address a potential outage on IBM z16 systems.
Description
This Machine Alert announces the availability of two HIPER MCL’s that have been released in Driver 51 Bundle S31b for IBM z16.
Driver 51 SE-I390ML EC P30716 MCL 031 was released in Driver 51 Bundle S31b to eliminate the exposure to a system outage on IBM z16 systems that use Coupling Express2 Long Reach adapters (CL5 Type Chpid - Feature Code 0434). This problem can be triggered by something as simple as a channel or link recovery event on a CL5 chpid.
Driver 51 SE-TORSW EC P30776 MCL 002 was released in Driver 51 Bundle S31b to address a communication problem on the internal service network for the IBM z16 systems. This service network is a key component for Support Element to Central Processor Complex communications.
While there may not be any disruption or impact to workload or Operating Systems if encountering this issue, this problem will impact clients’ ability to perform basic actions against the LPAR images from the HMC and/or the Support Element. Examples would be SYSRST, IPL, Image activation, etc.
Fix Information
Driver 51 - SE-I390ML - EC P30716 MCL 031 - (Bundle S31b released April 17, 2024) - HIPER MCL
Driver 51 - SE-TORSW - EC P30776 MCL 002 (Bundle S31b released April 17, 2024) - HIPER MCL
With the release of Driver 51 Bundle S31b, SE-I390ML EC P30716 MCL 028 is NO LONGER ON HOLD.
Recommended Action
IBM recommends installation of Driver 51 Bundle S31b on all IBM z16 systems as soon as possible to avoid the two issues listed above.
Note: Bundles S28, S29, S30, S31 and S31a were made NOT VALID FOR INSTALL during an MCL session. This protects against the two problems described in this alert document, which are both fixed when Bundle S31b is activated.
