Troubleshooting
Problem
You are encountering a problem with a Planning Analytics TI Process, however do not know where to start. The objective of this document is to help you better understand the steps you can take to better understand the underlying issue.
Diagnosing The Problem
To diagnose a problem with a TI Process you must quantify the problem and provide specific details:
-What is the problem being encountered? What is the expected outcome?
-Are there any TI Process Error logs produced? What is the content?
-Are all TI Processes affected? Or only one/some?
-Are all TI Processes affected? Or only one/some?
-For any TI Processes affected, how was the problem concern raised?
-Had the process worked before? What is the basis of comparison for the concern?
-Does the process work in one environment and not another? How do the environments/data compare?
-Does the process work in a different version of the Product?
-Does the problem occur consistently? If not consistent, what could be different between runs?
-Does the problem impact all users, or only some? If only some, what could be different between users?
-If the TI Processes uses a datasource, does the datasource matter? (for example, test with CSV instead of ODBC)
-If the TI Processes uses a datasource, does the datasource matter? (for example, test with CSV instead of ODBC)
-Are there any changes to the areas of the model that the TI Process interacts with?
-Do any of the TI Process functions used not appear to be working as documented?
-Do any of the TI Process functions used not appear to be working as documented?
When troubleshooting an issue with a TI Process, it is important to try and narrow down the scope of the problem:
-Focus on the unexpected behaviour of the TI Process, identify the code that performs the task
-Does the same code work in a new TI Process?
-Does the same code work in a new TI Process?
-Can the problem be recreated with variables/parameters hardcoded?
-Can logic (if/then/else) be removed to simply the code?
-Do the 'Generated Statements' blocks have an impact on the issue?
-Do the 'Generated Statements' blocks have an impact on the issue?
-Use AsciiOutput or LogOutput functions to write custom, meaningful logs within the process
-Does the TI Process call any other TI Processes? Are they required to recreate the issue?
-Any additional TI Processes called also need to be simplified, or removed from the equation if possible
-Can any of the behaviour be replicated using a sample database? (24retail, Planning Sample)
-Any additional TI Processes called also need to be simplified, or removed from the equation if possible
-Can any of the behaviour be replicated using a sample database? (24retail, Planning Sample)
When working with IBM Support, the questions/focus points above need to be made very clear in your problem description.
The following logs will be useful towards understanding where the problem may reside:
-TM1 Server Thread Output (TM1Top / Planning Analytics Administration)
-TM1 Server Logs
-TM1 Server Thread Output (TM1Top / Planning Analytics Administration)
-TM1 Server Logs
-TI Process error logs
Resolving The Problem
Depending on the scenario, troubleshooting an issue with a TI Process is not always straightforward and may require a deeper understanding of the underlying model. Simplification of the process and problem is the most important step to help with the understanding of the issue.
If you have a problem that is intermittent or only impacts a handful of users - the same set of logs/details should be provided from a scenario which does not demonstrate the problem - as this comparison will allow for a better understanding of differences.
If you have a problem that is intermittent or only impacts a handful of users - the same set of logs/details should be provided from a scenario which does not demonstrate the problem - as this comparison will allow for a better understanding of differences.
If you have a scenario which can be replicated on demand - it may be best to provide everything required to replicate that scenario to IBM Support in order to further expedite resolution to the problem. This would include:
-TM1 Data Directory / Database Backup
-TM1 Data Directory / Database Backup
-Including simplified version of TI Process
-TM1S.cfg file
