SRCB90036A0 during IPL to apply PTFs after 7.5 upgrade or new install

How To

Summary

After installing 7.5 OS at base level (i.e. from distribution media) for either a new install or OS upgrade, the IPL to apply the PTFs may fail with SRCB90036A0.

Objective

How to prevent the failed IPL from occurring or resolve if the issue does occur.

Environment

Only occurs on a 7.5 IBM i LPAR. It most commonly occurs when installing the latest cume (SF99750) and all groups (SF99751) together with the same IPL after an upgrade or new install of the OS.

Steps

To prevent the issue:
(NEW 2024-05-20) IMPORTANT - To prevent system termination with
SRC B90036A0 while installing this cumulative PTF package, PTF
SJ00641 and its pre-req SI85058 should be installed prior to
installing this package. Enter the following command to determine
if PTF SJ00641 is active: DSPPTF LICPGM(5770SS1) SELECT(SJ00641).
If the status is Temporarily applied or Permanently applied, the
PTF is active. If the status is Superseded, verify that the
superseding PTF is Temporarily applied or Permanently applied.
If PTF SJ00641 is not found or not active, electronically
download SJ00641 as a save file (via SNDPTFORD or Fix Central
"Download individual fixes" option) and install it from Device
*SERVICE BEFORE installing this cumulative PTF package.
SJ00641 is an immediate PTF and has an immediate pre-req of SI85058.
OR
  • Apply the current 7.5 cumulative PTF (SF99750) by itself (including the IPL) prior to installing any PTF groups. After the cume has been successfully installed, then apply the latest groups and IPL.
If the issue has occurred, the following will need to be done in order to correct:
  1.  A slip of the OS will need to be done using the steps documented here - Steps to SLIP Install the Operating System
    • Note that if an image catalog was used to upgrade to 7.5, IPL the system in B Manual mode. At the 'IPL or Install the System' screen, take opt 2 to install the OS and then take option 3 to install from virtual optical - preselected image catalog.
  2. Once back to the command line, download and immediately apply SJ00641 and its pre-req of SI85058. Then continue with step 6 (skip 3 through 5). If this is not possible, use the method described in following steps 3-5.
  3. If step 2 was not completed, another option is to only load the cume images. If using an image catalog to install PTFs, mount the PTF image catalog to a virtual optical device. Then change the PTF image catalog to unload all images except the 2 cume images:
    • WRKIMGCLG -> take opt 12 -> take opt 9 on each image that is not the cume (you can use F11 to see volume ID)
  4. (only if step 2 was not completed) Run GO PTF opt 8 with Automatic IPL = N to load just the PTFs from the cume media.
    • NOTE: GO PTF opt 8 from cume images will likely fail during the marking due to missing required PTFs. This is expected and ok.
  5. (only if step 2 was not completed) Immediately apply SI84469 & SI84173 and their requisites:
    • APYPTF LICPGM(5770SS1) SELECT(SI84469 SI84173) APY(*TEMP) DELAYED(*NO) APYREQ(*YES).
  6. Put the system back in Normal mode. This can be done with command CHGIPLA KEYLCKPOS(*NORMAL) or from the front panel or HMC.
  7. Then load all images in the PTF image catalog:
    • WRKIMGCLG -> take opt 12 -> take opt 8 on each image that shows unloaded
  8. Mount the first image in the PTF image catalog:
    • WRKIMGCLG -> take opt 12 -> opt 6 on the first image
  9. Run GO PTF opt 8  - check for errors after process
  10. Perform an IPL.
  11. At a command line, issue WRKPTFGRP command and verify the cume and groups are installed.
