How to automatically pick up IBM Content Navigator plugin updates

Question & Answer

Question

How do you ensure that Content Navigator users see new plugins and updates to existing plugins?

Answer

Traditionally, after a plugin update is deployed and the Content Navigator servers are restarted, users still need to manually refresh their browser cache to take advantage of the new plugin behavior.

Content Navigator 3.0.15 IFix 001 introduces a new capability that automatically refreshes the users' browser cache whenever a plugin update is made. To take advantage of this capability, the following actions are needed:

  1. Install the iFix on all ICN servers
  2. Add the following rule to the ESAPI web application firewall policy file, as described here: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/content-navigator/3.0.15?topic=security-protecting-your-web-application-by-using-firewall.

    <add-header name=”Cache-Control” value=”no-cache” path=”.*/plugin/.*/getResource/.*”/>

    As of Content Navigator 3.0.15 IFix001, this rule is included in the default policy file: ESAPIWafPolicy.xml.default

  3. Users must manually refresh their browser cache. Once this initial refresh is complete, whenever a plugin update occurs, users' browser cache is refreshed automatically.
