HeuristicMixedException and SocketTimeoutException occur when promoting or demoting cases in IBM Business Automation Workflow

Troubleshooting


Problem

When using IBM Case Manager APIs in Business Automation Workflow (BAW) to promote or demote case stages under continuous heavy load in a Cloud Pak for Business Automation (CP4BA) environment, it sometimes hangs randomly for 30 seconds and exceptions are thrown in FileNet Content Platform Engine (CPE), BAW and Custom application logs.

Symptom

Following exceptions are observed in BAW and CPE trace.log files:
An unexpected exception occurred. Message was:  ; nested exception is: javax.transaction.HeuristicMixedException
com.filenet.api.exception.EngineRuntimeException: FNRCE0066E: E_UNEXPECTED_EXCEPTION: An unexpected exception occurred.
Message was:  ; nested exception is: javax.transaction.HeuristicMixedException
and (with BAW diagnostic trace org.apache.cxf.*=all):
java.net.SocketTimeoutException: connect timed out

  at com.ibm.ws.wsat.service.impl.WebClientImpl$3.call(WebClientImpl.java:120)
