IBM Support

SAN discovery function on Linux Ubuntu

Question & Answer

Question

Is the IBM Spectrum Protect storage area network (SAN) discovery function supported on the Linux Ubuntu distribution?

Answer

The SAN discovery function works in a Linux Ubuntu x86_64 environment if you install an appropriate host bus adapter (HBA) application programming interface (API) library.

Procedure for systems with a Marvell QLogic HBA adapter
To enable the SAN discovery function on systems with a Marvell QLogic HBA adapter, complete the following steps:
  1. Go to the Marvell website to download the vendor's HBA API library package based on the Marvell QLogic Fibre Channel adapter model.
  2. Install the package on the host system.
  3. Run the following command:
    cat /etc/hba.conf
  4. Verify the installation by checking for this file in the command output:
    /usr/lib/libqlsdm.so
If the /usr/lib/libqlsdm.so file is in the output, the HBA API library is installed correctly. SAN discovery will work on this system.

Procedure for systems that use a different HBA adapter
To enable the SAN discovery function on systems with an adapter that is not provided by Marvell, complete the following steps:
1. Obtain the API library from the HBA vendor.
2. Issue the cat /etc/hba.conf command and save the command output.
3. Install the API library according to the vendor's instructions.
4. Issue the cat /etc/hba.conf command again and compare the command output with the output that was obtained previously.
5. If there is a new entry in the /etc/hba.conf file, issue the QUERY SAN command to check the output.
If the /usr/lib/libqlsdm.so file is in the output, the HBA API library was correctly installed and the SAN discovery function will work on this system.
