Abstract
The IBM z Integrated Information Processor (zIIP) is a key feature of the IBM Z platform that can reduce the hardware and software costs of owning an IBM Z system. A portion of the general processor capacity can be replaced by the lower-cost zIIPs. The configured ratio configuration of zIIPs to CPs can affect system performance. This paper details the results of a study focused on the performance and impact of utilizing zIIPs. A series of mixed CP and zIIP test configurations are evaluated by using the SAP Core Banking Day Posting workload. Each performance measurement is evaluated on system resource consumption and overall test workload performance. A system configured with a properly sized ratio of CPs to zIIPs can significantly reduce the total needed CP capacity while maintaining workload performance.
