LTO-9 SAS HH connected 7226 tape drives are not supported in AIX / VIOS partitions and may log VRSAS_FABRIC_ERROR, SRN2D11-4101

Troubleshooting


Problem

VRSAS_FABRIC_ERROR, SRN 2D11-4101 can be logged on boot up of AIX / VIOS partitions, with LT0-9 HH external tape drives, TS2290 LTO-9 SAS HH or, HH LTO-9 SAS, 7226 with Feature 8641 stand-alone tape drive connected. 

Cause

LTO‑9 SAS HH tape drives are not supported on AIX or VIOS. 
The following SAS adapters support LTO-8 or older but do not support LTO‑9 SAS tape drives:

  • Feature EJ10
  • Feature EJ11
  • Feature ES30
  • Feature ES31
  • CCIN 57B4 4‑port SAS adapters

AIX and VIOS do not currently have a SAS adapter that supports LTO‑9 SAS tape drives.
Although the tape drive may appear to function normally, it will log errors during system boot.

Only the Feature 8646 LTO‑9 Fibre Channel (FC) HH tape drive in a TS2290 7226 enclosure is supported on AIX and VIOS.

Environment

The LTO-9 SAS HH tape drive is only supported when connected natively to partitions with IBM I operating system, using  the following SAS adapters: 
 
  • Feature EJ2B (CCIN 57F2)
  • Feature EJ2C (CCIN 57F2), low‑profile

Resolving The Problem

LTO‑9 Feature 8641 SAS tape drives may appear to operate normally, but they remain unsupported on AIX / VIOS.
Using these drives will result in VRSAS_FABRIC_ERROR, SRN 2D11‑4101, being logged at boot.

To ensure proper configuration:

  1. Customers should verify their tape‑drive configuration purchased with their IBM sales representative.
  2. Only order IBM features that are explicitly supported for the operating system and system type.

The following are supported when using SAS adapters EJ10, EJ11, ES30, or ES31 (CCIN 57B4):

  • TS2280 7226 Model 1U3 Storage Enclosure
  • Feature 8541 (Half‑High LTO‑8)
  • Feature 8546 (Half‑High LTO‑8)
