Using HW Discovery IOR Collection LP to populate IO details

Troubleshooting

Problem

The HMC has the capability to provide greater details about the managed systems' hardware inventory through the process of hardware discovery.  The HMC displays this "detail" information on the physical I/O properties if IO Hardware discovery has been performed on the adapter. The information shown, including the microcode version, is the information gathered during the last hardware discovery operation.
The information shows an old, stale values in the following cases:
  • If the adapter firmware is upgraded
  • If the adapter has been added, replaced or changed
The user must manually perform hardware discovery again on the system to refresh the I/O details of the adapter which requires either the adapter to be unallocated or the system powered off and powered on again in hardware discovery.

Cause

IO Hardware discovery is only performed by the following operations:

1) Server power on with power on options set to "Hardware Discovery".
  • This "discovers" only I/O hardware information about the adapters in the server and creates detail information under the system properties.
  • When you enable this option, the system powers on in a special mode that performs the hardware discovery process by creating a temporary partition called "IOR Collection LP" that powers up to open firmware in order to record hardware inventory information to an IOR cache for the system.  Once the system reaches partition standby mode, the temporary IOR Collection LP for hardware discovery is created and started, which takes extra time and transitions the system to Operating.
  • If IO resources are not available, i.e. have a hardware error, are not seated properly, etc, they will not be discovered.
  • "Hardware Discovery" does not discover any other hardware resources, such as missing memory or processors, it is only for I/O resources.

2) Create System plan if all of the following conditions are true:

  • Retrieve inactive and unallocated hardware resources is selected.
  • Ensure that a minimum of 0.5 processor is available.
  • Ensure that a minimum of 256 MB of free memory is available.
  • Ensure any adapters you want to refresh information for with new or replaced IO is not assigned to a running partition.
  • Ensure that all logical partitions on the managed system for which you want to use the hardware discovery process are inactive. If a logical partition is active, the hardware discovery process cannot capture new information from the logical partition and that partition is skipped.

Environment

Any HMC hardware or virtual appliance
Any HMC Version or Release

Diagnosing The Problem

Sometimes the IOR Collection LP can be left behind and not deleted automatically during either process outlined above.
The normal sequence is the creation of the "IOR Collection LP" then it starting and transitioning SRCs.

Next the "IOR Collection LP" will show Running and transitioning SRCs for open firmware as the vterm is used to collect the IO details.

Next the "IOR Collection LP" will show shutting down and transitioning SRCs before it is deleted and disappears.

If the IOR Collection LP remains behind, select the IOR Collection LP, then go to Operations -> Delete partition.

Verify if the I/O details you expected were created, updated, populated, etc.  If not, contact your next level of support for why the IOR collection did not happen as expected.

Resolving The Problem

Clearing cached Hardware Discovery information

Note: This procedure requires root access using pesh.

As root run:
/opt/hsc/bin/hscSignal 300 <MTMS>
where <MTMS> is the server machine type, model, and serial in the format of TTTT-MMM*SSSSSSS (9406-MMA*1012345)

When no IOR data is available, the Details tab is missing when listing Physical IO properties.
