Disaster Recovery and Tivoli Storage Manager/Centera

Troubleshooting

Problem

Recovering Tivoli Storage Manager data on a Centera cluster following a disaster.

Resolving The Problem

Tivoli Storage Manager version 5.2.2 provided support for EMC Centera without the ability to perform storage pool backups. If the customer is interested in protecting their data by generating copies, they are required to utilize the replication feature of Centera. With this feature enabled, Centera will copy data stored in one Centera cluster to another in a remote site. In the event that a site disaster occurs, the following steps provide general guidelines for re-establishing normal operations using Centera. These steps allow the customer to gain access to their data stored prior to the disaster and to continue to store new data.

Assumptions:

  • Primary and remote Centera clusters are established to perform replication to each other. Refer to the Centera Replication Guide, P/N069001168 for more information.
  • The primary site server and hardware has been recovered.
    • This includes installing the new primary Centera cluster to replicate with the remote Centera cluster.
    • The remote Centera cluster is configured to replicate with the primary Centera cluster and has begun to do so.
  • Tivoli Storage Manager server has been restored and is running.
  • The remote Centera cluster IP address is known.

General recovery steps:
  1. Verify that the remote Centera cluster has begun to replicate its data to the primary Centera cluster. Refer to the Centera Replication Guide, P/N069001168 for more information.
  2. Update the HLA parameter of any device classes whose IP addresses are for the primary Centera cluster to the IP addresses of the remote Centera cluster. Once the update is complete, the customer can now begin storing and retrieving data from the remote Centera cluster.
  3. After the remote Centera cluster has completely replicated with the new primary Centera cluster, update the HLA parameter of any device classes whose IP addresses are for the remote Centera cluster to the IP addresses of the primary Centera cluster. Once the update is complete, the customer can now begin storing and retrieving data from the primary Centera cluster.
