Resolving The Problem

This document provides information on external Ethernet switches that may cause a CPI592E error message when varying on an Ethernet line description.

Error message CPI592E, reason code 40D30001, is posted for an Ethernet line description when it first attempts to go active.

The reason code states that the IBM System i system sent an XID to its own MAC address and received a response from another system in the Local Area Network. This error code may be a little misleading because this error has occurred multiple times with regards to a feature enabled on some Ethernet switches.

This can be caused by incorrectly configuring a port feature on some OEM switches, called Spanning-tree PortFast. If incorrectly configured, this feature can be disabled on the switch, and this may resolve the problem with the Ethernet line description failing. Disabling this feature and varying the line on corrected the problem in multiple instances.

An alternative to turning off Spanning-tree PortFast on the switch (which may be difficult for some users) is to delete and re-create the Ethernet line description to not use an XID (which is part of the 802.2 LLC protocol that is used with 802.3 Ethernet). To do this, change the Ethernet Standard (ETHSTD) parameter in the line description to *ETHV2 rather than *ALL (or *IEEE8023).

This situation applies to all 1GB Ethernet adapter cards and was implemented with the first release of these types of cards.
