Providing a Java Runtime (JRE) for installing and using FileNet Content Manager or IBM Content Foundation 5.5.12

Question

FileNet Content Manager and IBM Content Foundation no longer provide a JRE in the traditional installers. Instead, the customer must supply their own JRE. This technote provides guidance on which JRE can be used when installing, upgrading, or running the following components:
 
  • Content Platform Engine, including the Configuration Manager
  • Content Search Services, including the CSS tools
  • Content Platform Engine Clients
  • Content Services GraphQL API, including the Configuration and Deployment tool
  • Content Engine Bulk Import Tool
  • FileNet Deployment Manager (FDM)
  • Process Designer, including Process Administrator, Process Configuration Console, vwtool, and pelog
The attachment at the end of the technote explains how to set the required environment variables so that the installers and software use the appropriate Java version.
 
The containerized components of FileNet Content Manager and IBM Content Foundation that are built on WebSphere Liberty, include IBM Semeru 17.

Answer

The table shows which versions of Oracle Java, IBM Java, and IBM Semeru that can be used with the various components of FileNet Content Manager and IBM Content Foundation.

You can download versions of IBM Semeru Runtime from the following site: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/semeru-runtimes-getting-started. Functionally, the open and certified editions of IBM Semeru are the same. However, to open a ticket against a JRE, you must be using the certified copy of the IBM Semeru Runtime.

*Important: FileNet Deployment Manager no longer supports Java 8. If you initiate FileNet Deployment Manager with Java 8, an error dialog displays, and the following error is reported in the Eclipse log file. The log file is located in <FDM installation directory>\configuration:

org.osgi.framework.BundleException: Could not resolve module: org.eclipse.equinox.common [79]
Unresolved requirement: Require-Capability: osgi.ee; filter:="(&(osgi.ee=JavaSE)(version=11))"

Recommended minimum versions of Java

Following are the recommended minimum versions of Java:

  • IBM Java 8.0.8.10
  • IBM Semeru 11.0.20.0
  • IBM Semeru 17.0.8.1

Security Fixes

If using the JRE provided with an application server, contact the application server vendor to get the latest Java updates (including any security fixes).
