Number of time-series change if you zoom in/out in a chart

Question & Answer

Question

When you zoom in, sometimes you'll see more time-series than you would on the zoomed out chart.
How can this be explained?

Answer

One thing to keep in mind when using custom dashboards is that the dashboard is only showing the "Top N" groups.
The top groups are typically calculated using the specified aggregation - so if you're looking at average CPU usage, then the top groups will be the ones which have the highest average CPU usage over the time-frame you're looking at.
This can affect which groups show up in the chart - especially if you have a lot of groups that match the filters for your chart.
So if you zoom in, sometimes you'll see more time-series than you would on the zoomed out chart.
