Abstract
FCMs that are still on 2_1_11 firmware or earlier will go offline if they have not had a firmware upgrade or a power cycle in the last 800 - 900 days.
It is imperative that FCMs on these earlier firmwares be updated to FCM 2_1_12 or later firmware immediately.
Content
A counter used to keep track of inter-core communications in the firmware is not working properly, resulting in a timeout that causes the drive to go offline. If enough FCMs should go offline, access will be lost to the file system. This will happen if the FCMs on 2_1_x firmware have not been updated or power cycled in the last 800 days. See the HIPER on the FCM drive - https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6989587
It is imperative that these FCMs are updated to 2_1_12 before they reach 800 days of runtime.
Users Affected:
This issue can affect clients running on an IBM ESS 3200 with code levels 6.1.2.1 through 6.1.2.6 or 6.1.3.0 through 6.1.8.1.
Problem determination:
Verify that you are running on an affected level of FCM firmware. Firmware 2_1_12 or greater is not impacted. Run the following command - mmlsfirmware --type drive | grep 2_1:
[root@gemsdev35b]# mmlsfirmware --type drive | grep 2_1
enclosure firmware available
type product id serial number level firmware location
---- ---------- ------------- -------- -------- --------
drive 063410140653 SN12345 2_1_7 2_1_7 gemsdev35b Enclosure SN12345 Drive 9
Recommendations:
This issue is resolved with the FCM 2_1_12 firmware or later. This level of firmware is included in the ESS 6.1.2.7 and ESS 6.1.8.2 code levels, which are now available on Fix Central.
V6.1.2.7 or later:
V6.1.8.2 or later:
If you are running ESS 6.1.2.x, upgrade to ESS 6.1.2.7 or later. If you are running ESS 6.1.3.0 through ESS 6.1.8.1, upgrade to ESS 6.1.8.2 or later.
Once the new code level is installed, update the drive firmware by running the following commands:
- Remove old rpm and install new one:
# rpm -e gpfs.ess.firmware
# rpm -i gpfs.ess.firmware-6.1.8.2-1.x86_64.rpm - Update the firmware:
# mmchfirmware --type drive
If you are unable to upgrade to ESS 6.1.2.7 or later or ESS 6.1.8.2 or later for any technical reason, call IBM Support for assistance.
