Error description

  • Updates to VSAM data sets defined with option BWO(TYPEIMS)
during backup-while-open processing may not be detected by the
    backup utility, such as DFSMSdss.

    PE Information:
Users Affected: V2R4 users with PTF for OA57833 (UJ04671)
applied, V2R5, or z/OS 3.1 users that have VSAM data sets
defined with BWO(TYPEIMS) that perform backup while open.

User Impact: The causing APAR fixed the original problem but it
introduced a new problem. Affected users may have invalid
backups if the data set was modified while backup-while-open was

    processing.
Local fix: Contact IBM support for ++APARs, or wait until the
    PTFs are available.

    ****************************************************************
An uninitialized field may cause the Media Manager to fail to
set the indicator that backup-while-open processing uses to
check whether updates were made to the index component of the
data set during backup processing. Additionally, the return code
to the termination routine called by the Media Manager was
    passed incorrectly.

Problem conclusion

  • Code changes were made to ensure that the uninitialized field is
correctly initialized and that the return code is passed
    correctly to the termination routine.
