Abstract

This document details the hardware & software requirements for IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 and Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19

Content

The following components share hardware and software requirements. The components are:

  • IBM Storage Protect™ Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 --> which is part of the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot 8.1.19 product.
  • Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 --> which is part of the IBM Storage Protect™ for Mail 8.1.19 product.

The following information describes the minimum operating system and software requirements when you use IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19.

More software prerequisites

  • Microsoft prerequisites
    The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required and must be installed before you use IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19:
    • Windows PowerShell 3 or Windows PowerShell 4
    • Windows PowerShell 5 when used with Windows 10
    • Windows Management Framework 3 or Windows Management Framework 4
    • Windows Management Framework 5 when used with Windows 10
       
    The following Microsoft Exchange prerequisite levels are supported by Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange and IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Exchange:
    • Microsoft Exchange 2013: the minimum level supported for Microsoft Exchange Messaging API (MAPI) Client and Collaboration Data Objects (MAPI/CDO) is version 6.5.8320.0.
    • Microsoft Exchange 2016: to enable mailbox restore browser for 8.1.19 you must install either Outlook 2013 32 bit, Outlook 2016 32 bit, or Outlook 2019 32 bit.  Exchange MAPI (MAPI/CDO) must not be installed.  Microsoft does not recommend installing Outlook on the Exchange Server, so the Data Protection or Snapshot remote GUI need to be installed on a separate Windows Server or Windows 10 machine
    • Microsoft Exchange 2019: to enable mailbox restore browser for 8.1.19 you must install either Outlook 2013 32 bit, Outlook 2016 32 bit, or Outlook 2019 32 bit.  Exchange MAPI (MAPI/CDO) must not be installed.  Microsoft does not recommend installing Outlook on the Exchange Server, so the Data Protection or Snapshot remote GUI need to be installed on a separate Windows Server or Windows 10 machine
    • Exchange certificates:  For Microsoft Exchange 2016 or 2019, Exchange digital certificates must be installed and configured for the mailbox restore browser.  Ensure that the current Exchange certificates are installed and configured correctly in your environment.
      Note:  With Exchange 2016 and Exchange 2019, by default the Exchange Server is configured to use Transport Layer Security (TLS).  This TLS security encrypts communication between internal Exchange servers, and between Exchange services on the local server.
       

The following prerequisites from Microsoft are required, and are installed automatically by IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19.

Note: Installation of these prerequisites might require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that these prerequisites are installed before you start the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server installation process.
Note: These prerequisites are not automatically installed when you create your own silent installation package to install by using msiexec. In that scenario, you must manually ensure that the prerequisites are installed.

IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 requires the following components:
 

  • IBM Storage Protect Snapshot MMC Snap-in and Base System Services 8.1.19
    Note: This component is included in the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot on Windows 8.1.19 package.
  • IBM Storage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor 8.1.19
    Note: This component is included in the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot on Windows 8.1.19 package. It is also known as the IBM Storage Protect Backup-Archive Client 8.1.19.

Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 requires the following component:

  • IBM Storage Protect backup-archive client 8.1.19, and later 8.1.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions
    Note: It is a requirement of the IBM Storage Protect backup-archive client and the IBM Storage Protect API client that they remain in sync to the Version.Release.Modification level when used on the same Windows system.


 

More software requirements

The following software is required for storage of backups in an IBM Storage Protect Server:

  • The IBM Storage Protect API client 8.1.19, and later 8.1.x maintenance levels, new releases, and new versions
    Note: The IBM Storage Protect API 8.1.19 is included and automatically installed with
    - Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19.
    - IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19.
    Note: It is a requirement of the IBM Storage Protect backup-archive client and the IBM Storage Protect API client that they remain in sync to the Version.Release.Modification level when used on the same Windows system
  • Any IBM Storage Protect Server currently in support, which is supported by the version of the IBM Storage Protect API Client, or IBM Storage Protect Backup-Archive Client, used in the environment.

Hardware requirements

The following information describes the minimum hardware and disk space requirements when you use IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19 or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server 8.1.19.

Disk space
  • A minimum of 208 MB of disk space for the product to be installed.
  • At least 2.1 GB disk space for Microsoft prerequisites, which is installed automatically if they are not already installed on the system when you start the Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server or IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server component installation.
    Note: Some of the prerequisites defined in this document might require a system restart. To avoid a system restart, ensure that all of the minimum software requirement prerequisites detailed in the " Microsoft prerequisites " section of this document are installed before you start the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server or Data Protection for Microsoft Exchange Server installation process.
Metadata space requirements (IBM Storage Protect Snapshot for Microsoft Exchange Server only)
  • In addition to the space that is required for the global product installation, IBM Storage Protect Snapshot uses disk space to hold vital product data that is used to track and manage snapshots. By default, the metadata is stored in the'vss_staging' subdirectory of the IBM Storage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component's installation directory.
    Note: The IBM Storage Protect Snapshot VSS Requestor component is also known as the IBM Storage Protect™ Backup-Archive Client.
    The amount of space required is directly proportional to the number of snapshots that you maintain on the system. Ensure that there is at least 1 megabyte of available free disk space to hold the metadata for each snapshot that you plan to keep on the system.
  • In addition, if you are protecting a Microsoft Exchange Server, IBM Storage Protect Snapshot keeps mailbox history information in the metadata to support individual mailbox restore (IMR) processing. The amount of space required for this protection is directly proportional to the number of mailboxes in the entire organization. Ensure that for each user mailbox in your organization, at least 50 KB of disk space are free to hold the metadata.
    Therefore, it is recommended that you have at least 200 MB available for the described metadata - though the need for more is possible depending on your operating environment.
