Reports fail with "XQE-MD-0007 Unable to establish a metadata connection to data source" error due to insufficient disk space on the Cognos Analytics server

Problem

All report run requests result in the following error messages:
XQE-MD-0007 Unable to establish a metadata connection to data source /content/folder[@name='folderName']/folder[@name='folderName']/package[@name='packageName']/model[@name='modelName']: java.lang.RuntimeException: com.cognos.pogo.pdk.dom4j.Dom4jSoapFaultException

Symptom

Errors captured in the Cognos user interface:
XQE-MD-0007 Unable to establish a metadata connection to data source /content/folder[@name='folderName']/folder[@name='folderName']/package[@name='packageName']/model[@name='modelName']: java.lang.RuntimeException: com.cognos.pogo.pdk.dom4j.Dom4jSoapFaultException
Errors observed in the p2pd_messages.log file:
