Symptom

  • All attempts to connect to an email server using the SMTP Send Adapter fail
  • Errors in the noapp.log for each attempt to connect like:

    • ERROR 000000000000 GLOBAL_SCOPE B2BMailServiceA, retry = 1 , total retries = 1 com.sun.mail.util.MailConnectException: Couldn't connect to host, port: <email server name or address>, <port#>; timeout 30000;
  • A TCP capture shows a set of packets like the following for each attempt to connect. [Note, filtering may be required to see just the target stream.]

    • SB2BI(client)    TCP SYN
    • email server    TCP SYN,ACK

    • client        TCP ACK (for previous packet)
    • client      TLS Fatal Alert due to "unexpected message"
    • client      TCP FIN,ACK
