Linux Network Installation issue on VLAN tagged setup

Abstract

While doing a Linux network installation on a VLAN tagged setup, the OS installation fails with an error message and gets stuck at the grub rescue prompt.

Symptoms

While doing a Linux network installation on a VLAN tagged setup, the OS installation fails with an error message similar to the following example and gets stuck at the grub rescue prompt:

This issue affects only configurations where the VLAN tag is set in SMS. A virtual ethernet interface that uses a PVID VLAN, for example, is unaffected.
Workaround

Following are the possible workarounds for this issue:

  • Perform the network installation over a network interface with VLAN tagging performed by using the switch.
  • Perform a USB or DVD installation by using physical media or virtual media with VIOS.
