IBM FlashSystem Models 840/900/V840/V9000/A9000/A9000R - storage enclosure batteries expire after 4 years

Flashes (Alerts)

Abstract

FlashSystem storage enclosure batteries are designed with a finite end-of-life, which is approximately 4 years. A FlashSystem must have at least one healthy, charged battery in order to remain online. When a battery nears its expiration date, it should be replaced promptly.

Content

The storage enclosure batteries in FlashSystem models 840/900/V840/V9000/A9000/A9000R have an expected life of 4 years. "Life" of the battery is measured from the date a battery is first installed into a system, whether at the manufacturing facility or when a replacement battery was installed in a system on-site. This applies only to the batteries inside the FlashSystem storage enclosure The FlashSystem V840 and V9000 also have batteries in their control enclosures. Control enclosure (SVC node) batteries do NOT have a fixed expiration time. However, the software in the SVC node does monitor the charge holding capacity of the battery, and declares a "near end of life" and an "end of life" point which is purely calculated on a real assessment of battery state rather than the power-on time.

When a storage enclosure battery reaches 120 - 240 days before its "end of life" date, a warning message is issued from the FlashSystem. If the system is configured for Call Home and if it is covered by an active IBM maintenance agreement, a problem record (PMR) is opened with IBM. IBM Support will contact you to schedule a battery replacement. If your system is not covered by an IBM maintenance agreement, a battery may be purchased from IBM directly. See the link below for more information about purchasing batteries or an IBM maintenance agreement.

Caution: If you ignore the battery end of life warning and allow both batteries to expire (reach end-of-life), the FlashSystem storage enclosure will go offline, causing a temporary loss of access until at least one of the batteries is replaced and charged.

A FlashSystem will issue an end of life warning. It is important to replace a battery at least 30 days before it will expire. For more information about FlashSystem batteries, see:
