Cloud Pak for Security: Search Line limits were exceeded

Troubleshooting


Problem

DNS error returned in Cloud Pak for Security:
"Search Line limits were exceeded, some search paths have been omitted".

Symptom

E1025 (..) dns.go:126] "Search Line limits exceeded" err="Search Line limits were exceeded, some search paths have been omitted, the applied search line is: openshift-cluster-storage-operator.svc.cluster.local svc.cluster.local cluster.local os.test.testing.lab test.testing.lab testing.lab"

Cause

The search list is limited to six domains with a total of 256 characters.

Resolving The Problem

Red Hat OpenShift automatically adds the following domains in certain cases:

  • openshift-cluster-storage-operator.svc.cluster.local
  • svc.cluster.local
  • cluster.local
Resolve with a DHCP server that provides DNS search domains. To correct, reduce DHCP records to three, or less, for the:
  • Control nodes
  • Worker nodes
  • Optional: Bootstrap
For example, the DNS domain search records are reduced from:
option domain-name "os.test.testing.lab test.testing.lab testing.lab redhat.com icr.io example.com example.net example.org";
To: 
option domain-name "os.test.testing.lab test.testing.lab";
Changes needed depends on the DHCP server used.
