IT43132: AFTER UPGRADE TO V8.1.12.100, NAS NDMP RESTORE STILL FAILS WITH ERROR "UNKNOWN ERROR 4303 FROM SPIRTRVSEG"

APAR status

Error description

  • A NAS NDMP restore can fail with the following errors reported
    in the activity log:
    
    ANR9999D_2255209874 AsReadSegRemote(asrtrv.c:1515)
    Thread<748477>: Unknown error 4303 from
    
    spiRtrvSeg, pluginType 1. (SESSION: ######, PROCESS: ####)
    
    
    ANR1078E NAS Restore process ### terminated - internal server
    error detected. (SESSION: ######,
    
    PROCESS: ###)
    
    
    The DSMFFDC.log shows the following:
    
    [ FFDC_MSG_FROM_NDMP_DEVICE ]: (ndmpspi.c:3456) Mover seems to
    have stalled - aborting retrieve
    [ FFDC_MSG_FROM_NDMP_DEVICE ]: (ndlog.c:137) RESTORE: Error: job
    aborted
    [ FFDC_MSG_FROM_NDMP_DEVICE ]: (ndlog.c:137) RESTORE: Error:
    writing to symbol table interrupted
    
    due to an abort.
    
    This is the same failure described in APAR IT36030, yet an
    upgrade to V8.1.12.100 does not fix the
    
    issue. The restore stalls and then is aborted after a certain
    stall timeout value.
    
    IBM Spectrum Protect Versions Affected:
    Spectrum Protect server on all supported versions performing
    file level NDMP restore.

Local fix

  • There is no local fix available at the moment.
    
    A new server option will be introduced in future releases to
    allow admins to manage the stall
    
    timeout value.
    
    Option name:
    NDMPStallTimeout
    
    Description:
    The value specifies how many minutes to wait for an NDMP filer
    to send data to the IBM Spectrum
    
    Protect server during a backup. The default is 30 minutes.
