Abstract
Summary
The disk drive models listed in the table below may erroneously display a not ready error when initially powered on. IBM has released a firmware version to prevent the drive from incorrectly reporting that it is not ready. The updated firmware is available on the IBM Support site.
Content
This table lists the affected drives' identification strings and part numbers.
Storage Enclosure or Platform Base | Part Number | Sysconfig –a Output | Capacity | Update to Minimum |
N3200/N3150/EXN3000 | 46X9931 | X309_SMEGA03TA07 | 3 TB | NA01 |
N3200/N3150/EXN3000 | 35P1410 | X315_SMEGA04TA07 | 4 TB | NA01 |
N3200/N3150/EXN3000 | 35P1410 | X477_SMEGX04TA07 | 4 TB | NA02 |
To standardize serial number formats, the new FW in the above table includes a serial number format simplification: the last 12 characters are truncated. This reduces the serial number length from 20 to 8 characters; note the first eight characters (which uniquely identify the drive) are unchanged.
Issue Description
There have been no reported instances although there is a non-zero chance that one of the affected drives will erroneously post 04/02/xx/xx errors during system power-up. This proactive FW fix will mitigate the issue.
Symptom
Error messages similar to the following might be reported:
May 03 08:26:12 EDT [hdd-228: pmcsas_intrd_4: scsi.cmd.checkCondition:error]: Disk device 11b.14.23: Check Condition: CDB 1b: Sense Data SCSI:Not Ready - (0x2 - 0x04 0x00 0x0)(1000000).
May 03 08:26:12 EDT [hdd-228: pmcsas_intrd_4: scsi.cmd.checkCondition:error]: Disk device 11b.14.23: Check Condition: CDB 1b: Sense Data SCSI: Hardware Error - (0x4 - 0x02 0x00 0x0)(1000000).
Workaround
A power cycle of the drive may correct this erroneous error condition.
Solution
Update firmware per the table in above summary.
As a best practice, always update IBM products with the latest version of firmware and software to provide the best reliability, availability, and serviceability:
Data ONTAP®: Enhancements have been implemented, including several critical software changes to improve hardware induced error handling in a non-disruptive manner. These enhancements reduce the probability of a disruption for these issues, improve system stability and enhance diagnostic capabilities. So, while not required, it is highly recommended to operate your system under at least the minimum Data ONTAP as indicated here:
- For systems having Data ONTAP release versions earlier than 7.3.7P1, 8.0.3P3, 8.1.2, or 8.2P2; upgrade Data ONTAP. You can download the latest versions of Data ONTAP by choosing your platform from the IBM Support Website.
Disk and Shelf firmware: For information on how to determine the disk and shelf firmware version on a controller and verify it is up to date.
Hot spare drives: To best maintain the continuous presence of hot spare drives available in the system, adhere to Hot Spares best practices and follow the standard disk replacement process if a drive fails.
