This document explains how to export a system plan using HMC Version 7 and later.
Resolving The Problem
This document explains how to export a system plan using HMC Version 7 and later.
There are several options for exporting a system plan from the HMC including direct file download, removable media, and FTP. The options available may vary depending on the HMC interface used for access as shown in the following table:
| Hardware Management Console - Local interface | Hardware Management Console - Remote Web interface | Command line (local or remote) | |
| Export direct to remote PC | x | ||
| Export to media | x | x | x |
| Export to remote FTP site | x | x | x |
To export a system plan, click System Plans in the navigation area; then select the plan, and click the export system plan task.

The Export System Plan panel is displayed.

Export to this computer from the HMC
Available on: Remote Web interface only
Select this option to export the specified system-plan file to a file system location on the local system on which you are running the browser to access the HMC.
Select Export to this computer from the HMC, then click Export to open the Save File window.

Click the hyperlink with the system-plan file name, and use the save file function of the browser to save the file to the local file system. When the save process completes, click OK to close the Save File window and complete the export process.
Export to a remote FTP site
Available on: Both the local and remote interface
Select this option to export the specified system-plan file to a remote FTP site.
Export to Removable Media
Available on: Both the remote and local interface.
To export the system plan file to removable media, you must first mount the media using the command line interface.
Do the following:
Step 1: Mount the removable media:
| a | Insert the media into the HMC or connect the media to the HMC. The media could be DVD-RAM, diskette, or a USB storage device. DVD media must be DVD-RAM (other types such as DVD-RW will not work). USB storage devices must be formatted for FAT or FAT32. |
| b | Access the HMC restricted shell. On the local HMC, click HMC Management, Open restricted shell terminal. If remote, connect using a ssh client such as PuTTY. |
| c | Type the command lsmediadev to list the media devices that are available for use. If the device is not shown, the HMC did not detect it. Verify that the device is formatted correctly and retry. device=/dev/cdrom,mount_point=/media/cdrom,type=1,description=CD/DVD device=/dev/fd0,mount_point=/media/floppy,type=2,description=internal diskette drive device=/dev/hda,type=6,description=internal hard disk drive device=/dev/sda1,mount_point=/media/sda1,type=3,description=USB flash memory device |
| d | Mount the device. Use the command mount /media/xzy, where /media/xyz is the mount point for the desired device as listed in the previous lsmediadev command. For example, you typically use mount /media/cdrom to mount an optical drive, mount /media/floppy to mount a diskette, and mount /media/sda1 or mount /media/sdb1 to mount a USB drive. |
Step 2: Export the plan.
Select Export to media. In the Sub-directory on media field, enter the full path of the device you wish to export to. This would be the mount point (for example, /media/xyz) with any option subdirectory appended.
Step 3: Unmount the media.
Type the command umount /media/xzy where /media/xyz is the mount point of the device used above.
Note: Wait for the umount command to finish and return to the command prompt before removing the media. Removing the media without using the umount command can result in a truncated file.
Command line options
The cpsysplan command can be used to export an existing system plan file. This commands supports export to a FTP server or exporting to removable media. See man cpsysplan for further information.
