BRMS Problems When BRMS Media Monitor is Set to *No

Troubleshooting

Problem

BRMS problems that can occur when the BRMS Media Monitor is set to *NO may include the following messages:
CPF415A - *MOUNTED not correct.
and/or
CPA4278 - Active file found on this volume (C I R).

Diagnosing The Problem

Resolving The Problem

The media monitor notifies BRMS/400 of any media activity on the system and will prevent actions such as writing over an active BRMS volume. When BRMS is in use on the system, the value of "Media monitor" in the BRMS system policy should be *YES.  Any time the value of "Media monitor" has been set to *NO before performing BRMS activity (specifically but not limited to a backup) can cause issues.

1.Even if WRKMEDBRM command shows there are volumes available that are of the required media class and are at the correct location, an attempt to perform a BRMS backup to tape library device may fail with the following message:

Message CPF415A - *MOUNTED not correct

2.
A volume may accidentally be reused if the volume is written to and a rewind was performed.  This can result in reuse of an active volume from another backup or even the same backup.  This would cause the following error:

Message CPA4278 - Active file found on this volume (C I R)

3.
Using the ADDTAPCTG and/or the RMVTAPCTG commands for the tape library will update the logical location in BRMS to match the physical location.  With the media monitor set to *NO, BRMS is not updated with the volumes change of locations.

In order to verify and (if needed) change media monitor for BRMS you can use the command WRKPCYBRM *SYS, then take opt 1 (Change system policy) and check the value "Media monitor"

Note: If media monitor is set to *YES, check these other items which can also result in message CPF415A:
1. DSPTAPSTS <-- Is a category mounted for any of the tape resources listed for the tape library being used? If yes, demount the category. SETTAPCGY DEV(TAPMLBXX) OPTION(*DEMOUNTED)

2. WRKREGINF EXITPNT(QIBM_QTA_TAPE_TMS) and take opt 8. Is Q1ARTMS in library QBRM the only registered exit program? Is the exit program blank? If the exit program is blank, run INZBRM *DATA to add the BRMS exit program.
