Abstract

DS8000 failure to establish additional PPRC relationships (Re-issue of February 2 notification.)

Description

Risk categories:
  • DS8900F and DS8880 using PPRC in 3 or 4-site configurations
  • DS8900F and DS8880 with 2-site PPRC configurations, and creating additional replication legs for migration or testing
  • HyperSwap capability is NOT at risk

PPRC volume pairs are managed using up to three Relationship ID structures per volume pair.
During PPRC failover, a Relationship ID structure is taken.  A problem exists with subsequent PPRC failover operations for the same volume pair, where the prior Relationship ID was not cleaned up, and is not reused.  This can lead to the following issues:

  • Unable to establish additional PPRC volume pair relationships
  • Loss of disaster recovery protection during a region switch
  • Failure or delay (full copy) during a region switch
