Error description

  • In relation to APAR (IT24139) ->
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/apar/IT24139

    The keyword initially has a default value of "NewUDCRangeCHT=Y"
    when a WS-file session is created.

    To override this functionality, a keyword value
    "NewUDCRangeCHT=N" must be added to the WS-file session under
    [Translation] section.

    However, since the keyword "NewUDCRangeCHT" can only be applied
    in a WS-files, having multiple WS-file sessions means the
    keyword must be added in every single one to use this override.

    * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:                                         *
    * Cannot display Chinese characters which are in *
    * UDC-4 range (user defined characters) in PComm. *
    ****************************************************************
    * RECOMMENDATION:                                              *
    ****************************************************************
    By default, Big-5 to EBCDIC UDC-4 (C6A1-C8FE) range maps to
    EBCDIC (E0EB-E2D4) in newer versions of PCOMM. This creates a
    problem in displaying the character if the user intends to use
    the Big-5 UDC-4 range 8181-8C82 mapped to the EBCDIC UDC-4 range
    of E0EB-E2D4.

    User can enable the old Big-5 to EBCDIC UDC-4 range code point
    mapping 8181-8C82 to E0EB-E2D4 by adding the below keyword in
    the .WS profile file:

           [Translation]
           NewUDCRangeCHT = N

    However, this keyword needs to be updated in all the .WS profile
    files. A requirement to provide a common configuration that
    applies for all the .WS profiles was requested.

Problem conclusion

  • To avoid adding the keyword to multiple profile files a new
    keyword has been introduced in the PCSWIN.INI configuration
    file.

          [Xlate]
          NewUDCRangeCHT = N (Default value is Y)

    The configuration in PCSWIN.INI take precedence over the keyword
    added in the .WS profile file.

    PCSPREF.DLL and PCSXLT.DLL have been changed for this APAR.
