POP Clients Not Able to Send E-Mail Outside Their Immediate Domain

Troubleshooting

Problem

Specific actions must be taken in the SMTP configuration to allow POP users (outlook clients, cell phone clients, and so on) to relay e-mail through the IBMi to external domains.

Resolving The Problem

Specific actions must be taken in the SMTP configuration to allow POP users (outlook clients, cell phone clients, and so on) to relay e-mail through the IBMi to external domains.

SMTP must be configured to allow POP clients to relay email through the IBMi to outside domains. This change can be made present using the CHGSMTPA command from a command line, the System i Navigator through Client access, or the IBM Navigator for i accessed using a browser session.

When configuring for POP clients from a command line: CHGSMTPA (F4 to prompt), then page down until you find the Allow Relayed Mail and the POP send mail window attributes. To allow POP users to relay mail, *POPWDW must be added to the Allow Relayed Mail attribute. The time limit for POP clients to send e-mails out after the connection with the POP server is established is defined in the POP send mail window attribute. Pop client applications vary widely; therefore, selecting a large number for this time window is advisable to provide the greatest flexibility for all applications.

Whether using the SYSTEM i Navigator or the browser-based IBM i Navigator, the screens are very similar, so the path will be provided using the newer IBM i Navigator interface.

From your browser, you will need to access the IBM i Navigator by going to the URL http://The system IP address or name as known by your DNS server:2001

You would need to sign into IBM i Navigator with a system profile with QSECOFR authorities.

Once signed in, you would need to expand the options under IBM i Management to access the SMTP server, then right click SMTP and select Properties from the drop down:

Once in SMTP Properties, select the Relay Restrictions tab, then check the box beside From the POP client for the following duration, and then enter the number of minutes you want to allow a pop user to be able to relay e-mail once the client establishes a connection. (As mentioned above, POP Client applications vary greatly in their operation; therefore, selecting a large window of operation is advisable.) Note: If the duration is left at the default value of "0", POP clients will not be allowed to relay e-mail out at all.

Once the SMTP configuration changes are made, it is necessary to end and restart the SMTP server to pickup the changes. POP clients who already have a connection to the POP server will also have to end their email application and restart a new POP session to gain the ability to send e-mails out.
