Resolving The Problem

This document covers sending in a Collection Services collection object type *MGTCOL to the IBM i Global Support Center.

System Performance Issues: Gathering Collection Services performance data.

Step 1: Checking, Configuring, and Starting Collection Services

1.

Issue command CHKPFRCOL to obtain the current status of Collection Services. One of the following two messages will be posted when this command is run:

o Message CPI0A16 - Collection Services active will be displayed at the bottom of the screen and in the job log.
o Message CPI0AA5 - Collection Services not active will be displayed at the bottom of the screen and in the job log.

2.

If Collection Services is active, skip to Step 2: Saving Collection Services Data to a Save File.

If Collection Services is not active, the configuration can be reviewed and the collector job started.

Issue command CFGPFRCOL and press F4. The suggested settings are as follows:

Default interval . . . . . . . . > 5.00
Collection library . . . . . . .   QMPGDATA
Default collection profile . . .   *STANDARDP
Cycle time . . . . . . . . . . .   000000
Cycle interval . . . . . . . . .   24
Collection retention period:
    Number of units  . . . . . . .  00048
    Unit of time . . . . . . . . .  *HOURS
Create database files  . . . . .   *YES
Change PM iSeries library  . . .   *NO

3.

Issue command STRPFRCOL CYCCOL(*YES). This will start the QYPSPFRCOL collector job in QSYSWRK and will use the configuration from the CFGPFRCOL command.

Step 2: Saving a Collection Services collection object to a Save File

Follow these steps to save the performance data collection object:

1.

Issue command CRTLIB LIB(TSXXXXXXX)

where XXXXXXX = CASE number.

2.

Issue command CRTSAVF FILE(TSXXXXXXX/TSXXXXXXX)

3.

Issue command CHKPFRCOL and document the collection object and library in the message CPI0A16. When the message Collection Services active is at the bottom of the screen, you can place the cursor on the message text and press F1. Note the library and collection object in the message Cause.

Issue command CHKPFRCOL and press Enter.

Message . . . . : Collection Services active.
Cause . . . . . : The current collection object is QMPGDATA/Q167003003. The current collection profile is *STANDARDP.

4.

Use the WRKOBJ command to determine what collection objects are available to save.

Issue command WRKOBJ and press F4. The object will be *ALL, the library will be the current collection library and the object type will be *MGTCOL.

Example: WRKOBJ OBJ(QMPGDATA/*ALL) OBJTYPE(*MGTCOL)

                          Work with Objects (WRKOBJ)

Type choices, press Enter.

Object . . . . . . . . . . . . . > *ALL          Name, generic*, *ALL
  Library  . . . . . . . . . . . >   QMPGDATA    Name, *LIBL, *CURLIB
Object type  . . . . . . . . . . > *MGTCOL       *ALL, *ALRTBL, *AUTL

On the WRKOBJ output screen there will be a list of collection objects to choose from. Choosing option 8 to display description will show the creation date. Document the object name, QXXXXXXXXX, for the date needed.

Opt  Object      Type      Library     Attribute   Text
      Q165000002  *MGTCOL   QMPGDATA    *PFR
      Q166000002  *MGTCOL   QMPGDATA    *PFR
      Q167003003  *MGTCOL   QMPGDATA    *PFR

5.

Use the SAVOBJ command to save the collection object to the newly created save file. Note: To save the current collection object, Collection Services has to be ended, ENDPFRCOL FRCCOLEND(*YES).

Issue command
SAVOBJ OBJ(QXXXXXXXXX) LIB(QMPGDATA) DEV(*SAVF) SAVF(TSXXXXXXX/TSXXXXXXX) TGTRLS(*CURRENT) DTACPR(*MEDIUM)
This command will save the collection object to the newly created save file with data compression.

Start Collection Services again if it was ended. STRPFRCOL
